Sfhwanke Home Damaged By Fire Early Easter Sunday morning the Schwanke home was badly damaged by fire caused by defective wiring. Two fire departments answered the call put in by neighbors, but since the Schwankes were not at home, the call was not put in until flames were notices. Looking at the house from the outside, only the two sides of the roof remained. Bill Abbink and Herb Hill, on the scene before the fire department arrived, removed some of the furniture and an oxygen tank to prevent further damage. Stationed At Fort Knox Jim Dowhin, Jr., left for the Army on April 5 and has been assigned to Fort Knox, Ky. Shortly after his arival there, he was made corporal of his platoon. Jimmy will be home on leave vome time during the month of June when he finishes his basic training. Bobby McWiHfems Hurt I am sorry to report that Bobby McWilliams was hurt while playing outside his home on Thursday, April 15. He came thru the weekend just fine, but will be unable to attend school for at least 4 weeks. I don't know, Bobby, but it seems to me that there -must be an easier way to get out of school!! As volunteer workers totaling more than 500 visit communities throughout the county, the fund drive total is nearing the goal of $17,500. Another phase of the Cancer Society support comes to the front with the announcement of the Memorial Gift program headed by Mrs. Delores Ori, Wonder Lake. This is a gift in honor of a friend or relative claimed by cancer, Mrs. Ori explained. "Memorial contributions support cancer research in hospitals, laboratories and clinics," she said. "This money is used to provide fellowships for doctors and the manpower needed to carry scientists. They help train the manpower needed to carry out future research." The McHenry County Cancer Society has prepared a remembrance card and folder to help persons establish a Memorial Gift program for their friends. All county funeral home directors have this material. FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four aound reasons why every person should attend services regularly •nd support the Church. They ar«: (1) For bis own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily. When the buds burst into fragile flower, and their breath is everywhere, and a warming breeze caresses the cold, damp earth . . . this is more than Spring. This is the time of Promise. For these same festive branches shall lift a precious burden of fruit when the red-gold mantle of harvest falls across the land. When human souls awaken to the reveille of faith, and hymns and prayers fill the arches of heaven, and the warmth of an ageless hope reaches from heart to heart .. . this is more than Lent. For the faith which blossoms today will bear its own precious fruit. Love! Joy! Peace! The harvest of souls like yours and mine is beginning anew to grow.
