LEGION BALL-- Joe Stanek phoned to tell us that McHenry will have an American Legion baseball team again this year. That's good news. Dick Pickett will manage the team and will give us more news on the team as plans shape up. GRADE SCHOOL TRACK-- We have a note from Don Seaton telling that the grade school track meet sort of crept up on everybody this year. Mark the date: Monday, May 3rd at 3:45 p.m. This is the 8th Annual Meet and is staged each year by the high school for the grade schools in our district: St. Pat's, St. Mary's,, McHenry Junior High, Harrison School of Wonder Lake, Ringwood, St. John's of Johnsburg and Johnsburg Elementary. This meet is held to help stimulate interest in track and to give the boys some idea of the various events before they enter high school. Johnsburg competes in a conference where track is the spring sport. It is also reported that Harrison has started track competition this year. In the meet next Monday, ribbons will be given to the first five in each event.. Warrior Nine Loses 5-4 To Elgin Larkin Last Thursday the Warrior baseball team lost another 1-run game, this time being nosed out by Elgin Larkin 5-4. Larkin scored five runs in the first three innings as McHenry peppered away only to fall short in putting across one run in the last inning. Welcome aboard, Verona and the Dolls. We like to have you as part of our page. t / role RELAYS-- At this writing results are available on the Wheaton relays where rain and cold prevailed. Don Seaton's shot put relay team of Ron Gelvin, Tom Lunkeheimer, Jim Morenz and John Fleck won first place. That lets 'em know McHenry is on the map. STREP PULLS RUG OUT-- Something called a strep throat knocked our feet out from under us the past week and we had to miss a wedding in the family of long time friends, Harold "Zeke" and Charlotte Bacon. If memory serves, we stayed on our feet the day way back when they were married. McHENRY TRACK TEAM STRONG IN SOME EVENTS In the McHenry-Dundee-Antioch track meet last Thursday, Dundee finished with 64 points, Antioch 61 and McHenry 23. Showing strength in some events, McHenry picked up three first place spots as Pliner won the pole vault event with 10'6", Fleck put the shot 50'6", and Doran won the long jump, 19'8%". Flecks 141'3" was good for second place in th£ discus. In the 880 Y.D. Zvonar was third with 2:09.5. Gelvin was fourth in the shot put and Doran fourth in the high jump. The McHenry Sophomores picked up points all over the place to finish with 55 against Dundee's 62 total. Antioch was third with 31. Lossman won four first place spots for McHenry, winning the 120 H.H., 180 L.H.. discus and shot put. That was quite a performance for one afternoon. Placing second for McHenry were Johnson in the H. H., Newbaur in the 880, 880 relay, Johnson L.H. 23:6, Todd in the pole vault. Stine in the long jump 16'11" (missing first place tie by 1"), and the mile relay. McHenry county sports fans join Tuesday night, May 4 to honor six men who have displayed leadership in a distinctive way over a long period of time. The Woodstock Elks Lodge plans a Sports Night next week to recognize years of service to the sporting world and to the teaching profession by Dan Home, Harvard: Owen Metcalf, Crystal Lake; Leonard McCracken, McHenry; and Toney Roskie, Mel Stuessy and Larry Dale, Woodstock. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and tickets, are available for Elks members and their guests. Sid Corson is chairman. Charles Nihan, now in Belvidere, will head the part of the program that recalls incidents about the careers of the Big Six. Main speakers will be Bill George, Chicago Bears' all-time star, and Stan Campbell, former Detroit Lions lineman. Metcalf has been at Crystal Lake since 1925. His 1931 team was scored on only twice on the gridiron, one of the best teams he coached. He put on a gym show for more than 20 years that was distinctive and well-attended. Metcalf-coached track teams won the county title 28 out of 32 years. Fans in Crystal Lake honored him by naming the new football field after him last fall. Larry Dale has been at WCHS since 1926. Dale led the Blue Streak cagers to the state tourney at Champaign in 1937. He has developed his share of winners, including a 1937 football team that went undefeated." Mel Stuessy coached at St. Mary's for more than 25 years, taking the small Irish squad against bigger foes repeatedly. The success of the Irish through the years was a tribute to his coaching know-how, his leadership with the boys and his knowledge of sports. Stuessy is continuing his service as president of the WCHS board of education. Dan Home is the veteran of the group. He coached for more than 40 years at Harvard before retiring a year ago. He captured more than a dozen gridiron championships and was a giant on the competitive field even though his Hornets often played in .leagues in which they were one of the smallest schools. Fans named the grid field after Dan a few years ago--and the nickname of the Hornets is not meant as a salute to a member of the insect world. Leonard McCracken has been at McHenry since 1928, and was one of Northern Illinois' finest baseball coaches. In 1945 one o| his golf teams placed second in the state. He's developed or has seen many leading trackmen from McHenry go into state competition Toncy Roskie, WCHS coach since 1953, has been in Woodstock since 1929. He coached at Todd School for Boys until 1953, building many championships with a small enrollment. He has worked at Camp Tosebo, a boy's camp, for many summers. Toney began a varsity swimming program at WCHS, and Woodstock is the only conference school with a swimming team. Northern Mini Bowmen News Thi? Wind, rain and 40 degree temperatures stopped all but the most ardent golfers. The regular foursome of Hank Jackson, Matt Hoffman, Buck Rodgers, and Bob Schmaling was the only group that actually played 18 holes. Because the weather prevented the qualifying round for the Aggregate score Twosome Tournament, the Games Committee had a blind drawing for partners and tee times. This schedule will be posted in the locker room, Friday, April 30th As of this date the front nine is closed and only the weather will determine when it will be playable. Engels 423; E. Wirfs 423; M.
