Section Oa> -- P>fli Fwr THE McHENRY PLAINDEALEfl Thursday, May 20, 1965 SO I HEAR... If you ever heard of a deadline in the newspaper business, you will know that this comer is crowding to the limit. To help get us rolling, John Knox just came in to give us a few notes on local baseball. Lloyd Freund has been chosen as Commissioner of the county league and Milt Washow of Dundee as Secretary That shoul(0>e a good combination. Fred Petersen took over as manager of the Shamrocks and now has the help of Harold Freund, a veteran player and manager. The Shamrocks lead the league with 2-1, Johnsburg and Richmond are 1-1, and Dundee is 1-2. We have asked to have the standings and results sent in each week to keep you posted. John tells us that Ray Miller is still managing the Richmond team and has some good, young ball players. They are playing* an Old Timers game at Richmond next Sunday, to be followed by the Richmond-Shamrock game at 3 o'clock. As explained last week, we have had a space problem for two weeks and some news was left out. We are still catching up and will eventually get it all covered in reviews. So I Hear: So you missed the "Padre" and we're really surprised. Well, as you know, the "Padre" is a busy man, but will try to be with you more often. The "Padre". No--we do not know how busy you are, dear "Padre". In fact, we thought you might be a woman and used the name to throw us off. We know you not. PICK UPSTake time to talk with God. A little while each day. To thank Him for the sun and rain, And the flowers along your way. The best way to know God is to love many things. He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything. The place you. are in needs you today. Earth has no sorrow, that heaven cannot heal. Music is well said to be the speech of Angels. by The Padre. Rex Hester is listed in a news release from Loras College as receiving a monogram in basketball. From those who saw Rex play this past season, we hear that his shooting was great. We are not going to sti*etch this into a full columnv this week, but let us not forget to mention that a team called the White Sox has won 9 straight games at this point. Herb Reihansperger called to belittle our team for the way these games have been won. We'll take those wins any old way. They count in the records. You just stick with the Cubs and the Badgers, Herb. On second thought, that may be asking too much. -- WHICH IS BEST??? "This one thing I can do", or "I dabble in a dozen things." STOCK CAR RACING Every Saturday Nite County Speedway Wilmot, Wis. PAT'S HONOR PLAYERS AND CHEERLEADERS Last Wednesday evening, May 12th, the annual St. Patrick's School Athletic banquet sponsored by the Holy Name Society was held at the V.F.W. hall. The excitement of the evening was generated by the prer sentation pf school letters to the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who had actively participated in basketball as players or as cheerleaders. The fine backing received from Father Parker, the parents and interested parishioners made the banquet a success. Bill Pictor was M.C. for the occasion and introduced Coach Miller who in turn recognized the successful efforts of Coach Clarence Schaefer and Coach Gene LaFontaine. The trophies, the letters, and the warm congratulations of Father Parker assi^red the success of the occasion. In behalf of the varsity, Pat Long very capably presented Coach Miller with a token of their sincere appreciation. As an encore from last year, Coach Tom Parsley of Marian Central was introduced. His sincere interest in young people and enthusiasm for the part sports can play in their lives captured everyone's attention. Coach Parsley is also direct enough to leave no doubt in anyone's wind on the responsibility of the parents and of the school to direct the actions and the thinking of students rather than let them mold their own pattern. We had real fine pitching from Vern Petersen and Russ Cox, but Richmond had a few scratch hits and our sloppy fielding cost us the ball game. We left our hitting clothes home Sunday. Gene Freund had 2 for 3 and Vern Petersen had 1 for 1. Vern Petersen had to leave after two were out in the fourth inning when his arm tightened up and he couldn't throw any more. There was a fine attendance at Sunday's game and we hope that we will see you again at our next home game Sunday, June 6 against Dundee. McHenry AB R H RBI B. Funk 3b 2 0 0 0 B. Harris ss 3 0 0 0 G. SPORTS JAMBOREE The third annual McHenry Junior Sports Jamboree will be held Sunday, June 20, at McCracken athletic field, according to an announcement made this week by Lee Hiller of the McHenry Jaycees, sponsor of the event. by Verona Kent "Who's going to get my goat"? That was the theme song Tuesday as a good crowd of dolls challenged each other in a new and novel goat getter" competition. We will be hearing more as the results come in, in the weeks to come. Regardless of scores, number ten will always get our goat! The challengers getting someones goat were: Nell Fidler, Dee Overton, Joan Buss, Barb Weber, Betty Phalin, . Liz Nolan, Em Smithson,' Lil Kimball, and Jane Weiss. Adding tvt-o goats to their established herd of five, were Bell Vitense and Dot Freund. To the losers, well, next week--just "go-go-goats". - The low net event for the day was tied in class A by Dee Overton and Lil Kimball with an 82; Sully Consago came in with a 90 in class B. and Nell Fidler with an 89 in class C. Approach .shots were sunk from all angles, as Marion Donnelly dropped one into cup number 2 and again into cup 10. Then Evie Hans also showed her skill on number 2, and that tricky cup on number 6. Nice playing girls! Experts claim that the art of putting wins tournaments. Our last weeks low putters showed them how, when Bette Moss only took 13 in class A, Sully Consago 15 in class B, and Marianne Cristy 16 in Class C. The ringer tournament started this week and will gain in popularity as the weeks fly by. Don't forget the two ball foursome coming up May 23 for ladies and men only, with dinner dance following. Sounds like fun, so sign up that man of yours. Also the best ball threesome (for girls only) is set for May 25--so it looks like the beginning of a good golf season for the divot dolls. Threesomes and times are posted for the Best Ball Threesome to be played next week. This is an interesting type of competition so it should be fun for all. The winners of low gross for this week were: Class A--Belle Vitense; Class B--Lu Funk; Class C--Marian Donnelly. Thanks to Lil Stilling for writing the preceding week's "Divot Dolls."
