The McHenry auxiliary bowling team was presented a trophy for first place in their league. McHenry unit wag represented at the May meeting of the McHenry County Council in Harvard. County President Ruth Mrachek, her secretary, Sue Wirfs, McHenry Unit President Lydia Fenner, Signe Miller, Pearl Cooper, Marge Mikota, Delia Freund and Bobbie Carroll attended. Memorial services were held for nine members of the county who passed away during the year. The County Council honored thirteen of its Gold Star members present, including Signe Miller of McHenry. The new slate of officers for the county to be elected in June are president, Mary Peters of Algonquin, first vicepresident, Marge Alvis of Crystal Lake; Mary Kuechen of Hebron, second vice-president; historian, Mable Schultz of Huntley; treasurer, Paye Carlson of Algonquin; Ruth Mrachek of McHenry, chaplain; and Agnes Wappler of Hebron, sergeant- at-arms. These candidates will be presented for election at the June county meeting in Hebron on June 4. The .McHenry County Council also endorsed Emily Cowlin for president of the Second division, Mae Chesak for Eleventh district president and Marge Alvis for Eleventh district treasurer. The county will host a tea for the Girls Staters in Huntley May 31 at 7:30 p.m.. Members of McHenry Unit 491 entertaining the veterans at Downey hospital were Della Freund, Sandra Schultz, Jim Schultz and Fred Schoewer. Candy, cup cakes and fruit were served. Vickie Bottari and Eleanor Creutz were elected to the nominating committee by the members. This committee wiU- present their slate of officers to be elected at our June meeting. This drop follows a decline of 20,per cent the previous year, continuing a trend that has these spectacular boomers and dancers on the verge of extinction. Fewer than 500 prairie chickens remain from a statewide population that once numbered in the millions. Several groups, including garden clubs and a large conservation organization in Peoria, have shown concern for the bird and its welfare. The rapid decline of the prairie chicken in Illinois is attributed by wildlife biologists to loss of grassy nesting cover because of changing agricultural practices that increased the acreage of row crops, corn and soybeans.
