Her term was ending with the meeting Thursday, May 27. A new honored queen was to be elected -- Ruth Lightner. A new term will begin at installation on June 5 in the Acacia Masonic Temple at 8. New officers were elected and appointed. Those receiving elective officers were: honored queen, Ruth Lightner; Senior Princess, Connie Sallman; Junior Princess, JoAnn Weichmann; Guide, Chris Fournier; and1 Marshal, Lorilee Klontz. They and the newly appointed officers will be installed Saturday at a public installation. Under Good of the Bethel, Libby had her mother and dad escorted and introduced. It was a complete surprise. She presented Mrs. Stinespring with a corsage of red roses (symbolizing "the best friend a girl can have -- her mother") and purple and white flowers, the colors of Job's Daughters. Mr. Stinespring was given a white carnation, symbolizing Libby's love for her dad. Then Sandi Fairchild sang the song that was sung for Libby when she had her first night as honored queen, "May You Always Walk in Sunshine" -- Libby's wish for her parents. Everyone was deeply touched by the lovely tribute. Then, Libby read her report -- the queen's report, of her term. All the members thoroughly enjoyed it as they relived with her the experiences and highlights of the past six months. With one accord, we all say, "Well done, honored queen, Libby!" Following the meeting, Libby led her officers and, members down to the surprise that awaited them. The refreshment tables were decorated]J with a gay May-pole, and from the attached ribbons stood beautiful, fluted, ribbon dolls in pastel colors all made by Mrs. Marty, Libby's Nana, who had prepared surprises for the Jobies at each meeting. Nancy Winters and Karen Larson had ice-cream, cup cakes and punch for refreshments. Libby's last meeting will always remain in our memory -- and Libby's especially; Mrs. Peterson kindly took pictures of each phase of the evening for Libby's memory book, to help keep it alive. Hack Engineering, Ringwood in coordination with Economy Production Parts Corporation of Zenda, Wis., a $250,000 Illinois corporation, of which Frank W. Hack is. president, have on display a complete patented, "On The Spot Precious Mineral Recovery, and Refining Unit", for placement on rich gold mining properties in northwest Nevada. Gold and other valuable minerals will be recovered in the form of bullion, from local mines in the area, and readied for shipment to th® U. S. Mint. Thus many miles of useless and costly trucking will be eliminated. Many years of development and very substantial sums of money have made possible this project which is phenomenal in its functions. Equipment will soon move west and will be in .operation under the observation of two top ranking mining engineers at Saddle Mountain. Four additional units of greater capacity are scheduled for the assembly line, in anticipation of a rapid expansion of mining in that area and elsewhere. It is anticipated that manufacturing facilities at Zenda will be moved to Illinois, in the McHenry county area, if cooperation can be obtained. The deplorable condition of the t,rold situation, as revealed by the American Gold Association, can be bolstered by the rapid production of this equipment for use on the now dormant gold mines. SprU^lutl tZpoiS by Rep. Thomas J. Hanahan, Jr. In this article, I have decided to write a little of the workings of the legislature, its faults and its benefits. In my five months as a legislator, I have found that the work is hard, the hours are long, and the pay is short. First of all, I would like to say that I voted for a $3,000 increase in salary for the next members of the General Assembly. The notion that, we voted ourselves a raise in pay is false as this increase does not go into effect until the next session and we do not know if we will be re-elected. This increase brings the salary for a member of the General Assembly to $9,000 yearly, and I feel it is needed if the citizens of bur state are to have honest, efficient and qualified members in our General Assembly. We are allowed $50 for mailing expenses for the two-year period. I receive an average of about 150 letters a week which have to be answered. This very newspaper article, including the headline mat, is done entirely at my own expense. As one loan quickly figure, the $50 doefe not go far when purchasing I stationary, envelopes and stamps. The average person does not know that we must pay our own lodging and food bills while in Springfield. They do not realize that we do not have state cars and that we ever, pay for our own license plates. I have procured subscriptions to the various newspapers in the area in order that I might be well-informed of happenings in our nearby communities. My telephone bills are quite considerable, both here at home and in Springfield and the numerous affairs which I attend are all at my own expense. I know that some people might reply that I asked for it, but let me assure you that it's hard to believe unless you are involved with the liabilities of this office. One of the many benefits of being a member of the General Assembly is education. The greatest benefit, however, is the feeling of satisfaction of attempting to accomplish the aims and objects of not only myself, but of those in our area. Roger Reichert, chairman of the McHenry county unit of the American Cancer Society, has announced the availability of a unique film aimed at adu'.its to help them place thi problem of smoking in perspective. Reichert and other members of the county board saw this film at the May board meeting. The film is called simply, "Who, Me?" One of the most important facts board members gleaned was that when a person stops smokirjg his body is able to repair damage to his lungs and chances of death from lung cancer are greatly reduced. "Even heavy smokers -- as well as moderate smokers -- will enjoy this significant advantage," said Reichert. Reichert speaks with feeling about the subject. He used to be a heavy smoker. Then one day, he1 quit. As the film points out, quitting isn't easy -- and the film shows ad-lib statements by four ex-smokers who establish that the habit can be broken when the smoker really wants to break it. . All testified to the satisfaction achieved physically, psychologically, and mentally. Reichart said local organizations, industrial and professional groups, school groups and others may obtain this 19 V2 -minute color film for showing without charge by contacting Mrs. Alice Rath, the unit's education co-chair- T ) '"tk1 r* ,-i" . i - t * • • V .
