Dedicated members of the American Legion Post 491, members of the World War I Barracks, the rifle squad, the color guard and those GRE--A-T!! kids -- the Viscounts, were all at their very best. We must offer sincere thanks and appreciation to Commander Tim McCormack, Commander Pat Owens, Tom Landre, Ed Reid, and Dominic Volpendesta for their tremendous co-operation. They, and the folks who comprised the various groups were just, wonderful. Trey Covalt, drum major of the Viscounts, in his tall plumed hat truly inspires the young men and ladies whom he leads and we want them to know just how much they were appreciated!! Tim McCormack's address was an inspiration and Bill Brand's magnificent voice really made the program. In his beautifully trained tenor voice, he sang "America, the Beautiful" and "God Bless America" and had the audience join him in the national anthem. Miss Jane Frost in a very dignified manner and dressed in her Girl Scout uniform, offered the pledge to the flag. McHenry high senior Jim Morris gave the invocation and the benediction. She and Frank worked like beavers most of Friday and Saturday and went back on Monday to clean up the beachhouse, box the remains of the stock and prepare it for the Salvation Army who claimed it on Thursday. Mrs. Gertrude Murphy was general chairman and she and Ray did their bit also with assistance from many of the other gals in the club. There were many and varied items in addition to the scads of clothing. Some of the more interesting included two TV sets, a hood for a stove, tables, chairs, hardware, equipment and lots more. Plenty of customers caused the cash to roll in and the club has a larger treasury with which to work. An amusing episode included a lovely young woman accompanied by two handsome male* with beer cans in their hands. Who came to make a purchase. They selected a complete pink outfit for her and also bought a birthday gift for a friend. They made their selections so solemnly and thanked the clerks f8r being so co-operative. Those who observed their actions were convulsed when the strangers departed. The birthday gift they selected was a wide brimmed brown Homburg that Rich Johnson had been "eyeing". Said it really reached him! Imagine this reporter's retort when daughter D.D. came home with a pair of cut-off jeans which she found such a bargain!
