Indulgent parents are asked to be aware of the danger of thinking, "I had fireworks when I was young and nothing happened to me". They were only lucky. Described as equally dangerous are the safety flares brought to the front of stores and sold as a "safe and sane" way to celebrate the Fourth. Safety flares burn at 2,000 to 2,500 degrees fahrenheit and contain a steel spike on one end. Surely some of you must have known a child who lost an eye through the use of fireworks. The remorse of parents cannot be imagined. Better to deprive the youngster of one small pleasure than years of regret. McHenry has many talented persons, and at least two of them were recognized this past week. At the popular art fair, much attention was devoted to the one-woman show of Lori Wilhelm. Many familiar scenes were evident as the viewer witnessed the variety of artistic works. Lori has long been generous of her time and talent in the community. The art fair recognition is well deserved. There was also considerable pride in the leadership displayed by „ young Lynn Krebs of, Eastwood Manor in attaining the high post of governor at Girls State. Lynn has an enthusiasm and sparkle Chat attract friends easily, along with the ability to lead. The fact that she is the first McHenry girl ever elected governor is a source of pride to her family and friends. It was an interesting gathering of the press with McHenry hospital officials at a rtoon luncheon last Thursday. Correspondents from the nearby communities who write for the Plaindealer were informed on the expansion program now T§ But WE HAVE clients who have all cash for your small farms with living qmners. WINS TOP OFFICE AT GIRLS STATE (Continued from Page 1) dicial branches were studied by participation in mock government during the week's training. On leaving McHenry Tuesday of last week, Lynn had not yet decided what office to seek when she became settled in Girls State on the campus of MacMurray college, Jacksonville, 111., and involved in the citizenship training offered. A letter received by her parents early Saturday afternoon informed them that she was getting little sleep after choosing to run for governor. The letter contained a vivid description of cutting out campaign stickers with a razor blade in the small stream of light which sifted through the door of her room. A phone call from an ecstatic and tearful daughter informed the Krebs late Saturday afternoon that she had been elected. Chosen By Faculty Selection of Lynn to represent the Junior class of M.C.H.S. at Girls State resulted from a vote of the faculty on such attributes as. interest in civics and government, good character, self-reliance, honesty and cooperation. Scholastic rating and physical fitness are other requirements. She represented the Legion Auxiliary Unit 491 of McHenry at her week long stay. Lynn has been active in school in the American Field Service, which she serves as president next year; French club, Tenth Legion, Science club, Current Events club, Modern Music Masters, Girls Athletic Association and chorus. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Within her church--Faith Presbyterian-- Lynn is secretary of the youth group.. As Girls State governor, she will have an opportunity to return to Jacksonville next year. After that, present plans call for her to enter Eastern Illinois University, where she will enroll in courses preparing her to be an interpreter. Lynn has a brother, Phil, 15, and a sister, Barbara, 8. Two From Area Vie For Title well under way in the city. This is a completely modern project which will very soon provide McHenry with a facility of which all may be proud. K. A. F.
