THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER McHenry Country dob ••r't 'i a H"!' i M i i n I 'l'iH.'M'ii 1^4! Thursday, June • 24, 1965 30 I HEAR... It was Fathers' Day--"that one day , of the year^when we ,are king for a day. We announced early that we were boss around the house for the day and certain people let us bask under that assumption all >*day. ants. John Reinboldt, son of the Vern Reinboldts, hurled a no-hitter for the Cardinals and fanned 17 batters along the way. How did you other dads make out? We arose early, attended church services, enjoyed a more than adequate "breakfast, didn't pick up a dish, read the Sunday paper, snoozed a few times and spent one of the laziest days of our lives. The Sox-Boston doubleheader was on the agenda. Pete Ward's home run took care of the first game in extra inning tension. Then the rains came to wash away the second contest. There were cards that went to our heart and appropriate gifts that will be worn and consumed. Then day was done and the darkness fell. Monday is another day and father comes out of his dream and back to the reality of every day problems. We fathers make the jokes about our position in families, but down in our hearts know that we owe much to good mothers who spend more time with our children and instill respect for their fathers in their minds. We are grateful for whatever blessings come our way. If we sometimes seem sentimental, it is because we are . . . In looking at that tight American League race, we recall that Jim Brosnan (pitcher turned writer) picked Cleveland to win the American League penant. He stood alone at the time, but may have company now. Bringing Rocky Cola vi to home where the fans love him was a master stroke. Getting Hinton from Washington was another. We are watching that Tribe. The McHenry Pony League will have opening ceremonies next Sunday and the boys hope like all get out that a crowd will be there. Here are a couple of pitching masterpieces that took place in the last week. John Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Anderson of Mineral Springs, had 17 strikeouts as he poured 'em in for the Gi- If you parents and friends of our young people cannot make it any other time, please try to be there next Sunday at the V.F.W. diamond. . As usual, a few people are giving their time all siimmervto help these boys. The rest of us should give „a little time. . Besides, it is great fun to wjitrh those games. Ask somebody to go with you next' Sunday. You can't tell Petie Schaefer that McHenry isn't still a one-horse town. Somebody rode a horse up to his store the other day and tied it to a parking meter. Petie was quick to get oui there with a broom as the Main Street crowd watched. Met Larry Nimsgren the other day and learned that he is now a "Chicago fan". He is a C u b f a n , b u t . . . . Saturday; June 19th, the Tigers traveled to Stateville for their annual game there. The prison team which is undefeated so far this year, walked oft with a'4-3 decision. The Stateville Trojans"took an early . 4-0 lead before right hander Jim Meyers settled down to pitch real good ball the rest of the way. The Tigers chopped at the Stateville lead but were unable to come up with timely hits in the last two innings when they had terrific swing opportunities. First of all, we ask the cooperation of all players and fans to help keep the Little League and V.F.W. grounds clean. The refreshment stand is there for your enjoyment and the proceeds from this stand have gone to supply lights and new fences to help make this a better Little League. But the littering must stop! We have placed several containers near the field, so please place" all your litter in these containers. Managers and officers will be on the look out for anyone who throws paper jOn the ground. So don't be surprised if someone taps you on the shoulder and says "let's pick up that candy wrapper". Now on the fun side of things let's look at how the teams are doing. In the majors every team has won at least one game, so that shows good balance. In the minors, the games have been real exciting. A team may have a bad game one week and then pome back like a tiger the following week. In the minitaures, the games have been terrific. These youngsters give it ail they've got. For the latest standings of the teams, look at the big standing board in the front window of Ernies Sports Center. by Agnes Prazak Due to some unforseen circumstances the opening da$ ceremony was cancelled until Sunday, June 27. The ceremony will be held right after the first game is over. June 15 saw the Giants win over the Sox 11 to 3. Anderson, pitcher for the Giants, struck out 17 boys from the Sox. On that day two home runs were hit, one by Stevec. George of the Giants and the* other by Doug Belohavy of the Sox. On June 17 the Cards clobbered the Braves by a score of 16 to 4. There were three home runs by the Cards. They, were hit by Vanek, Hester an<f Laursen. Only one home run was hit by the Braves and that was from Kirk Links. June 20 saw John Reinbolt pitch a no-hitter against the Sox. Due to an error on the Sox they only scored 1 run &nd the Cards scored 5 runs. Th6 second game of this day had to be called because of rain. This game will be played June 21. Ten top hitters: Name AB Pet. Beautiful weather and the good golf course brings many strangers to the course, so keep an eye on personal belongings left even temporarily in carts or on picnic tables. Ringer scores are getting lower each week. Apparently there is some good golf being shot by the Divot Dolls.
