Thursday, July 8, 13(55 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALEH TWICE TOLD TALES FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 2, 1925) Through the efforts of the camp committee and other members of the McHenry County Council, Boy Scouts of America, the Boy Scouts of this community will have the opportunity of attending a real honest to goodness camp for at least seven days. The camp , is to be located on the bank of the Fox river, three miles north of McHenry on the Schmidt Farm with a place to go swimming and a fine j^ace to fish. Tents- with wood floors large enough for eight boys will be used and the canvas is of such a ,qu;ili1y that continuous rains will riot sonk the tent. The passenger boat "Alice" has opened its nineteenth season to' carry . passengers between McHenry, the Chain-o'f- Lakes and the lotus beds. Special trips by appointment to Wilmot, Wis.. and all other points along Fox River and the Chain-of-Lakes. Excursions evT ery day, leaving Bidder's pier back of the Knox garage at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Mrs. Roy Norton, mother of nine children, passed away at the Cottage hospital. Harvard, as the result of burns sustained in a fire which destroyed the family home at Spring Grove. Mrs. Norton attempted to start a fire in the kitchen stove with kerosene. Live coals in the stove ignited the kerosene, causing an explosion and setting fire to her clothing. Dr. Klontz of Richmond was called and ordered the victim to the hospital, where every science known to the medical profession was used in saving her life but to no avail. The Dr. D. G. Wells property consisting of a lot, a large two-story house and private garage locaterd on the northwest corner of Green and Kim Streets, passed from the local physician's ownership to that of Tom Dattolo of Arlington Heights and Charles and John Unti of this city. Dr. Wells purchased the corner some twenty years ago and then built the residence. He has occupied the place ever since its construction, where he maintained his private residence and also his office. Possession of the property will not be given until Jan. 1, 1926. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 27, 19401 Mrs. Susan Baer, a former resident of McHenry, passed avvay Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth's hospital, Chicago. Mrs. Baer was bom in Johnsburg, her parents being the late Frank and Elizabeth Smith. Miss Jean Rogers of 'Elgin daughter of Fred Rogers of McHenry, fulfilled her greatest ambition a few months ago when she was accepted as an airline hostess. After successfully passing all of the rigid mental, physical and efficiency tests to which candidates are subjected, Miss Rogers was accepted for the four-week training course by the Transcontinental and Western Air Lines, Inc. flying to Kansas (• ity on Jan. 31, Passing these rigorous tests, Miss Rogers received the £ieater honor of being transferred to Chicagc where she. is now making regular trips from Chicago to New - oi k City and from Chicago to Kansas City with T.W.A. lines. The Leorlard Carlson family has • moved from Rmgwood to the Buchert place on John St root. William Schlidt, 47-year-old farmer of Greenwood township. was drowned in the milk cooling tank of his farm home. His body, which had submerged in 2 feet of water, was found by a milk trucker. TEX YEARS AGO (Taken from files of Thurs., June 30, 1955) Herman Steffes and A. M. "Mike"' Budler announce the grand owning of the Boone Creek Laundry on July 1 and 2. Eugene Eppel, who farms on Rt. 120 west of McHenry, suffered a disclocated and broken ankle when he was kicked by a cow. He has been confined to Memorial hospital since that time. Miss Georgie Owen became the bride of Phillip Ahlberg of Chicago in a pretty wedding service which took place in Sacred Heart chapel of St. Patrick's Catholic church June 1H. Mr. and Mrs. Ahlberg will make their home in McHenry. One of McHenry's most successful ventures is nearing realization. The Little League baseball park will be dedicated next Wednesday evening, July 6. The new park is located on the V.F.W. grounds and is complete to the last detail. A home run fence has been constructed with donors' names neatly lettered. A score board keeps you posted. Bleacher seats have been built. Dugouts look like big league arrangement. The back stop is a dandy. The field has been built to standard specifications looks very neat. larence O'Brien, a resident of Lilymoor for the past fourteen years, died June 23 in Memorial hospital, where he had been confined for the past five days. George Hartmann, Jr., who has been confined to Memorial hospital in Woodstock since the auto accident in which three were killed last May 1, suffered a broken arm early this week. Wrhile moving around in his walker, he fainted and fell. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Carey are the parents of a daughter, born at Memorial hospital June 27. NEW LEGISLATION BENEFICIAL TO 4-H MEMBERS 4H Club members numbering 1,228 in McHenry County will benefit from legislation to increase the agriculture premium funds paid to approximately 80,000 4H Club members for projects exhibited at the Ilinois county fairs. The bill passed the Illinois House unanimously 169 to 0, and now goes to Governor Q'to Kerner for his signature. s Senator Dennis J. Collins, R-DeKa!b, was the chief cosponsor of the legislation.
