Martin Smith, tip" Jfrom St. Louis, was in for our annual chat. The visit was too short. Martin, chuckles over that trade that gave the Cardinals Lou Brock. Observations while watching the big leaguers play ball: You can't groove a ball to any big league hitter without sad results. Good bunters are scarce. Catchers Still tip off outside pitches. Telephone operators continue to be very kind to callers needing help in emergencies. People should let the telephone company know. Too often we register complaints, but fail to report the. good deeds. What's our big hurry these days? One pill gets into our blood stream a few seconds before another so that's the one we should buy, say the commercials. So long as that little pill does the job when it gets there is all we care. There are many great Negro stars in baseball. But, where are the catchers? If there is another Roy Campanello around in the bushes, our team could use him. Pitcher Pena, Detroit hurler who set the Sox back on their heels the other night, pronounces his name "Pain-ya". That's the way he struck us, too. Saw Warren Holly's service truck parked in the Pries parking lot last week when it was 95 in the shade. The sign painted on the truck advertised "SNOW REMOVAL". Nobody around or we would Thought the other day that it was about time for Bill Pries to break into the news again. Now, he makes it. Bill called his shot on the ninth hole at McHenry Country Club, then sank a hole-in-one. Putting on a ham act, Bill told the two golfers with him just how he was going to put that ball on the green and into the cup. Only Bill Pries could pUt on that act and have it come true. We have reported quite a few of his unusual antics over the years. Hollywood should know about our Bill, In Russia they sent an Englishman to prison for talking against communism. At the same time the commies were running a training ^school for "students" in our country. These trainees will be sent to our colleges where they seem to have been successful in stirring up trouble. Those great leaders of revolt do not like our form of government, but enjoy the privileges that only a democracy can afford. We believe that all U.S. citizens should take an active interest in maintaining high standards of government. When they plan to change or overthrow our form of government, they can go away. On Sunday, August 1, 8 p.m. at the V.F.W., the Teen Age Softball team will play Bimbo's in the annual battle of youth vs. age. A league game will be played before this special attraction. A sociable group of friends gathered 'round at the Tony Varese home Monday night to meet "The Champ", Rocky Marciano. We have previously told you our impressions of Rocky. They haven't changed. After meeting him on only two occasions, we seem to think of him as an old friend. Bill Marqiiart, who is on the way up in the heavyweight ranks, was also present and told us he is going into the Marine Corps for six months. He won't get out of condition there. Sox fans like John R. Schmitt were mighty happy when the Sox beat the Cubs Monday night with the greatest of ease. Nary a Cub fan pfaoned us until Tuesday evening when Jerry Miller phoned with congratulations. And, he's a real Cub fan . . . all the way. PICKUPS-- Belief is a truth held in the mind Faith is a fire in the Heart.' He is happiest Avho hath power to gather wisdom from a flower.. Happiness is best attained by learning to live each day by itself. The worries are mostly about yesterday and tomorrow. Prepare today for tomorrow and forget about yesterday. Better do a kindness near at home, than walk a thousand miles to burn incense. --by "The * Padre" NOTE to "Padre's Helper": Our sports page copy is in and space is filled. We plan to give your fine effort a second look before things start humming next week. Photo Shown at the poolside of Tony Varese's home Monday evening are Rocky Marciano, Mrs. Marciano and Mr .Varese. In front Mary Ann Marciano and Dcbra Varese (in w.e pool). Tony Varese entertained the famous undefeated heavyweight boxing champion. Rocky Marciano and his family at a cocktail party this past Monday evening. Guests wandered informally from poolside to patio and visited with Rocky and his wife as a pool filled with young people splashed merrily. Rocky arrived at the Varese home Sunday evening after serving as parade marshal for the annual celebration and rodeo at Madison, Wis., July 23 through 25. The McHenry visit was a pleasure trip f>>r the Marciano family, who make their home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where 13-yearold Mary Ann will be going into the seventh grade. Rocky just recently testifier! in Washington at the hearings into the boxing game. He is optimistic that a National Commissioner of Boxing will return the fighting profession to its once esteemed place in the sports world. Rocky also was advising his young protege from McHenry, Bill Marquart, to make the most, of his upcoming sixmonth hitch in the Marines. When Bill returns, Rocky will resume his management of Bill's career. In the first game, two runs in the fifth inning gave us the lead 5-3. Cary scored their fourth run in the sixth. The big inning was the seventh. We scored what seemed to be four big insurance runs and a padded lead of 9-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Cary took advantage of our mistakes and turned them into four runs, leaving men on first and third when the final hitter struck out, falling short 9-8. Leaving too many men on base and poor defense cost us the second game. This second game was a replay of our first round game with Carjjj Grove which ended in a 0-0 tie. We led 5-4 going into the sixth .which was the last inning due to darkness. Cary scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a hit and two costly miscues. This time we fell short 6-5. Legion Notes Dan Jamieson led the hitting attack in both games going 2-3. giving Dan 4 hits in 6 official times up for the day. Ray Bottari had a good day getting 2-5 and 3 RBI's. Mike Jamieson had 1-1 which was a big hit in the seventh inning of the first game and drove in the 2 decisive runs. Pitcher Tim Freund was the winning pitcher in the first game striking out 5, walking 4 and allowing 2 hits. Mike Jamieson pitched the last 2 innings of the first game. Dave Smith was the losing pitcher in the second game, going the 6 full innings backed up by poor defensive play. Dave struck out 7, walked 3 and allowed 7 hits. Bunny, a 13-year-old toy collie owned by Estcilc Busse of 109 Nippersink Drive, McHenry, is the community's latest hero. His story will touch the hearts of all animal lovers. Last Friday afternoon two white, pet ducks were swimming in the channel in Pistakee Highlands when suddenly a mink attacked them. The drake quickly swam away, making a loud noise as if to summon help. In the meantime, Bunny saw the female duck in distress. He dove into the water and continued to swim around the duck and kick until the mink lost its hold. Youngsters in the neighborhood, impressed with the ddg'5 heroism, gave Bunny a gold cup which reads "Worlds Greatest", and two blue ril3-" bons with the words "Hero'-', and "Bunny". The ducks are owned by. Melvin E. Pedersen of 101- Nippersink Drive, Pistake£ Highlands.
