It can plague anyone even our most highly oonrlilionrV athletes and astronaut*. Oddly enough, t hv» throo groups that usually escape motion sickness are: children under the a^e of two; lhe elderly; and the deaf. These groups are normally immune because their inner ear is not sensitive to the sensations that may upset your sense of glance, a disturbance which can result in dizziness, and nausea. The sensations that cause motion sickness can be set off in several ways. One is the type of motion.' Angular or rotating motion -- such as you might experience in a boat or airplane -- is much more likely to make you ill than an upand- down motion, as found in horseback riding. Your eves tri'r ,.rer them too In fact, the influence of your vision can be so powerful you don't even have to move to become sick. The blur of movement on wide-screen movies, for example, can make you more uncomfortable tb:in ac 'ua! 'motion. What's the best remedy? If -you have suffered a very mild or "silent1' heart attack. How does the KCG reveal all of these secrets? The answer lies in the action of the heart itself. When a ;:evson is at re^t. the only muscular activity of any importance is the alternate co;itr.action an.I expansion ol the heart. Like a large, throbbing transmitter, the heart sends electric currenl in waves all over the body. It is these \vaves ihat -are picked up by pail's of sniall electrical coaluctors on .the. KCG and transmitted on a calibrated, moving sheet to foim an electrocardiograph, Usuallv the eonduelors called leads -- are connected to the forearms, left leg and chest near the heart. Kach series of waves makes an elec- | trical record of the changes • that take place with one beat | ; of t»he heart. Because only one! (wave may be abnormal in the: j presence of heart disease, j more than one lead is necessary j to make an accurate diagno- ; sis. I Pespite the great value of j 'ihe KCG. it does not give all | the necessary -information j j about the condition of the j | heart. For example, it cannot j j tell for certain if the heart is i alright or strong. When eval-j uated along with heart x-rays, : exercise te^ts, heart sounds 1 and blood tfsts, however, it helps your doctor to diagnose the exact condition of your heart with great accuracy-. With this information, he' can' -be alerted to trouble early and begin treatment that may spare your heart for years to come. So, if your physician has advised an KCG, be glad ho did.
