It is back to school and, as our M & M columnist .pointed out with some concern, there are five days added to the school year. That little note brought out a lot of old arguments about school teachers. There isn't enough rime or space to list the pros and cons. All we can say is our dear teachers are losing ground. Aftpr all, they had a five day week when the rest of us had six or more. And when wo were kids in school, many of us wanted a nine month vacation with three months of school. It is all a matter of viewpoint. ft Outdoors by Jack Walsh With the opening of school comes brand new seasons in various sports. Football will take the spotlight first and we look forward with enthusiasm to the first kickoff of the season. Coach Hargis doesn't have too many lettermen back, but ihas a large squad out for practice. It is surprising how much some of these fellows grow in one year. Word has it that the Warrior offense will be varied this year so look for an interesting season ahead. With a smile, Ron Vacula says we misquoted Don Wattles in regard to football being played in August. We have agreed to print a statement from Don and will want a recent picture of him to go with the story. Mere fun! Ed Doyle, our neighbor with whom we stage a running battle on the merits of the Cubs and Sox, has threatened to send his new watchdog after us. You should see that little poodle. We could put him in our side pocket- Springfield, 111. -- A 40-day Illinois duck season beginning at sunrise Saturday, Oct. 30, and closing at sunset, Wednesday, Dec. 8, has been selected by William T. Lodge, director of the Illinois Department of Conservation. The daily bag limit of four ducks may not include more of the following species than: 2 wood ducks, 2 canvasbacks, 1 mallard and 1 pintail. The possession limit may not include more of the following species than: 2 wood ducks, 2 canvasbacks, 2 mallards and 2 pintails. The limits on American, redbreasted and hooded mergansers, in the aggregate of these species, are 5 daily and 10 in possession, of which not more than 1 daily and 2 in posession may be hooded mergansers. The daily bag limit cn coots is 10 and the possession limit is 20. The goose season will open statewide with the exception of Alexander, Jackson, Union and Williamson Counties, at sunrise Friday, Oct. 15. and close at sunset Wednesday, Dec. 8. The goose season in Alexander, Jackson, Union and Williamson Counties will open at sunrise Monday, Nov. 8, and close at 3 p. m., Thursday, Dec. 23. However, the gcose season "^an these four counties may be closed prior to Dec. 23 if the harvest quota of geese, as established by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is reached. The daily bag and possession limits of 5 geese may not include, in the alternative, more of the following species than: 2 Canada geese or subspecies; 2 white-fronted geese or 1 Canada goose or subspecies and 1 white-fronted goose. BASEBALL CONTEST WINNERS Two McHenry boys won first place in the Baseball Grand Slam Contest sponsored by Fury Motors in McHenry. Pictured are Keith Covey, eight-year-old winner, Earl Nehring, chairman of the Lake Region YMCA board of directors, and ten-year-old winner John Seaton. The Lake Region YMCA served as contest director. PONY LEAGUE NOTES Here is a list of the boys that played in the McHenry Pony League this year. Braves One of the finest fellows we have known, Ed Pfannenstill, passed away last week. Ed may not have been as well known as Some who are active in civic or political ventures, but to those who knew him, he was a good man. We think that must count when the final score is posted. Since Juaii Marichel whacked an opponent over the noggin with a baseball bat, it has occurred to us that he is in the wrong game. He should take up hockey. The difference is that the other fellow has a stick in his hands too. After watching the Sox beat the Angels in the first game on Labor Day, we toured up to Pistakee Country Club where Bill Malpede (a Cub fan) turned on the second game for us. A crowd scon gathered 'round and all were Sox fans. With all the noise and excitement, one nice gal caine over to our table and held her little radio to our ear. Man, did we have fun! Got in the right crowd that time. Ralph Waldo Emerson, as a boy, herded his mother's cows on the Boston Commons. City of McHENRY NOW has Parking Spaces The Illinois Vizsla Club will hold an AKC sanctioned field trail at the Wing 'n Fin Club, Sunday, Sept. 12 for Vizslas only. These Hungarian dogs are gaining in popularity and the public is invited to watch them perform. Wilmot Season Closes With Harris Champion Don Erickson of Milwaukee has raced for eight years as a driver in Modified Cars, but it took until the final night of racing at the. Kenosha County Speedway in Wilmot before he won his first race in a feature. The race, originally scheduled for Sat. night, was rained out and ran on Sun. night. This marked the first time the track has ever run a Sun. night race. It was however, the third time in as many years that lap leaders in the 100 lap race shared in the $1000 lap prize money. Erickson's share was $410 for the 41 laps he led. He took the lead away from Fran Seamers of Milwaukee on the 28th lap and led until he lost the lead to Duane Harris of McHenry, who later broke an axel and then lost out to Erickson. Second in the race was Seamars followed by Jr. Dodd; Gino Wagner; Chuck Uttech; and Jim Sullivan. Sullivan and Harris were each dueling after having started in the back of the 20 car field. Harris finally came up and was third. Then Sullivafr went around him and two laps later, spun his car while trying to take the lead. Sullivan spun twice more but still continued and wound up 6. Seamars won $270 in lap prize money and Harris won $320. a.b. .pet. McHenry Bows to Johnsburg 6-3 The Johnsburg Tigers came up with a 4 run fifth inning and hung on to defeat McHenry 6-3 last Sunday. The game was the first of the final playoff series for the county League Championship. McHenry opened the scoring on bunt singles by Cox and Adams and a single, by Jim Petersen. The Tiger's big inning came in the bottom of the fifth Mack led off with a walk and after two out, Hiller's groun ball to third base was thrown away. Freund reached an error and Kaslausky aWi d Smith followed with back to back run scoring singles. The Tigers added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings and then held on to win. Ed Mack got the win for Johnsburg while Cox took the loss for McHenry. Next Sunday the Tigers will travel to McHenry for their final game of the season.
