HEATING SAFETY "Dear Sir: , - "In the case of defective heating equipment I can point out that in McHenry county, the part I am familiar with (Lakeland Park and Lakeland Shores area), there are many heating installations where the furnace is under the house in the crawl space. This is dangerous if no safety device exists to turn off the gas to main gas valve. The latter supplies the main burner in case of high rising water under the house, due to not having a pump, or if there is a pump, it is inoperative for some reason. High rising water occurs in this area during the winter months usually. Last year, under my home in the crawl space, the water rose to the highest level in five years that I lived in the house. "During the night while my wife and I were sleeping the water had risen to interfere with the proper operation of the gas burner (main gas burner) of the heater installed in the crawl space and robbed the burner of its normal air supply. This caused the flame to become an expanding yellow. flame that left the burner chamber to exit through the openings of the furnace and envelope the exterior of the gas furnace. This was gradual as the water apparently slowly rose until the exterior of the furnace was engulfed with the expanding yellow flame due to the lack of oxygen. "We reported this to the insurance company, our township supervisor and the zoning office in Woodstock. We also sat in on a meeting of the county officials and reported the weakness in crawl space heating installations if no.safety device is provided to shut off the gas when rising water threatens to interfere with the proper operation of the heating unit. Suggestions of the banning of this type installation came in conversation with the State Fire Marshal's office whom I called by phone. They claimed it was in the power of the local county officials to eliminate the danger. I hope they do before someone dies from this cause during a high water period. "The National Fire Protection association reports that fires last year (1964) took the lives of 11,900 persons and caused property damage amounting to almost 1 billion 700 million dollars. The number of persons who died in fire in their own homes rose to 6.550. Nearly a third of the victims - 3.500 - were children. Defective heating equipment and cooking equipment plus careless smoking habits accounted for 42 percent of all 1964 fires of known cause. "R. C. Smith, P. O. Box 4, McHenry. PROJECT SUPPORT On Tuesday, Sept. 7, the High School P.T.A. sponsored a "Sock Hop" at the high school gymnasium.^ Music was supplied by a local student rjroup, the Jaguars (George Sorenson, Rick Vycital, Jeff Brand and Mike Moore); and John Weichmann of the McHenry Police Department was on hand to assist the P.T.A. should it become necessary. Other than minor good natured grumbling at doffing their shoes, the young people who attended the dance left nothing to be desired as far as their behavior that evening. The "Sock Hop" committee was most enthusiastic about the dance and their efforts were made more enjoyable as a result of the fine conduct of the students. Since proceeds from the dance are to launch the Scholarship Loan Fund, all assistance was from the goodness of the hearts of those who are enthusiastic over the P.T.A. project. The board would like to make the public aware of this generous spirit. McHenry High School .T.A. Board Nowqays, employers seem to be- the only people in favor of hard work. McHenry, IlL PHONE 385-1180 Safer Driver More Important Than Need For Safer Automobile There is a great hue and cry these days for a |safer automobile,' but from here it seems that the great need is for more and better driver education. According to an authoritative report, 48,000 persons died in traffic accidents last year. In addition, 3,840,000 persons were injured. The prime cause of these accidents was excessive speed -- human error, lack of judgement, and perhaps a lack of respect for the other fellojv. Far too often a driver passes on the wrong side, apparently because he feels he must reach his destination in record time. Many times we plod along at our steady pace and catch up with him at a traffic light several miles down the road. Sometimes we pass his car piled up against a utility pole, or even tangled in another car. It provides us with A good lesson. Yet there is also an inherent danger. We may look at the wreck in passing and tell ourselves, that can't happen to me." But tragically a highway death will strike some 50,000 families this year and more than 4,000,000 persons will sustain injuries of varying degrees. ' " _ .
