When you "feel like" something very sweet to spread on toast or English muffins or to make use of a small amount of leftover piecrust, have on hand this flavorful marmalade or preserve. It is simply prepared. Peach and Orange Preserve, 12 peaches, sugar, 6 oranges. Peel the peaches and oranges, cut into small pieces and measure. Add 1 cupful of sugar for every cupful of fruit and let stand over night. In the morning boil slowly for 10 minutes. Pour hot into sterile glasses. Let cool and cover with melted paraffin. If you have leftover pie-crust, roll out thin and cut into squares or circles. Put small quantity of the marmalade on half the pastry and cover and seal with rest of pastry squares or circles. Bake in greased tin in 400 degree oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. T O P Q U A L I T Y F O O D S AT L O W E S T P R I C E S ... Meat makes the meal. Farm Fresh -- 4-6# avg. Roasting _« Chickens J/ The Drivers Seat The top-heavy station wagon with loaded luggage racks was speeding over the country road, dust trailing behind. Inside, children were bouncing on the seats and, when they could manage it, standing on their heads. A flower-print sport shirt flapped in the evening wind from the arm that rested on the driver's window ledge. The car full of happy people was rounding a curve. Suddenly, in the dusk just ahead... Cr-a-ash! The car had rammed the back of a combine being pulled by a tractor. If a red and orange triangular emblem had been mounted on the back of that combine, the tragedy might never have occurred. Thousands of these "slow - moving - vehicle emblems" are being mounted on the backs of tractors, wagons, field choppers, combines, balers, manure spreaders and other machinery throughout the country. The SMV emblem is reflective around the outside and fluorescent in the middle. High-impact fluorescent paint gives drivers advance warning during the day. And the lightreflective paint does the same at night. According to T. David Mc- Farland, agricultural safety engineer in the National Safety Council's farm department, there were 7,000 to 8,000 collision accidents during 1964 in which fast-moving vehicles "rear - ended" or sideswiped slow-moving farm vehicles. About 100 people were killed in these collisions, said Mc- Farland, and 1,600 to 1,800 were injured. NSC and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers have endorsed the slowmoving vehicle emblem, developed at Ohio State University. Future Farmers of America chapters and 4-H clubs are promoting them. Nebraska and Ohio passed laws this year making the emblems mandatory on slow-moving vehicles. Information on how to make an SMV emblem can be obtained from the Ohio Farm and Home Safety Committee, Box 3122, University Station, Columbus, Ohio 43210. jj-oUk WaugMerb ^tlewA Last Thursday night was an important one for the McHenry Jollies. Aunt Virginia Gunter came to inspect our work. Everyone was relieved when she announced we passed inspection. It u as also an important night for Janet Drake and Cindy^^nd Sue Osbourne. They were initiated into Job's Daughters. After the meeting, it was a birthday night for all. Everyone brought a tweny-five cent fun gift. Then each girl picked a number and received a present. The decorations consisted of birthday candles, cupcakes, balloons and other things for a birthday atmosphere. Everyone had a great time! Don't forget, Oct. 16 is our spaghetti dinner.
