HAIL RATES At the Illinois State Water Survey in Urbana electronic data processing machines are becoming more and more important in research, and work in the atmospheric sciences is no exception. At the water survey, all historical weather records for Illinois have been punched on IBM cards, * totaling over three million, and machine analysis methods have been developed for their use. A regional adjustment of hail nsu:ance rates was possible because more exact hail data collected by survey scintists showed significant regional differences in occurrence of hailstorms. The result has been a savings of $3'2 million to Illinois ' farmers since 1961.
