Minus the trees which add to the scenic charm of the old building today, the edifice was known in these early days merely as McHenry School. The exact date of this picture is unknown, but it was at this time that both hi^h and grade school classes were conducted here. About 1926 the present high school was built. Participating in the line of march and program in the city park were both the Legion and V.F.W. and their auxiliary members of McHenry and many other organizations and individuals in this area. HIGHWAY BEAUT1FICATION Engineers of the Illinois Division of Highways are developing plans to expedite use of the state's $3,200,000 share of $70,000,000 appropriation by Congress for highway beautification, Virden 'E. Staff, chief state highway engineer, has announced. Staff said that $3 million of the state's portion of the beautification funds will be used for highway landscaping, construction of rest areas and purchase of scenic easements along the $14,000 miles of interstate and primary highways in Illinois. No state matching funds will be required. Shop In McHenry TURTLES MAY INFECT Pet baby turtles are linked with salmonella infections in human beings, according to recent reports. Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said last week that tui'tlerelated cases have been reported in Illinois. Turtles are most frequently handled by children who, as a group, are not careful to wash their hands. Children are most susceptible to salmonellosis than adults and their infections are more severe. The infection is marked by violent diarrhea and cramps. Let lis take care of your gift selection for you. Call us, and we will take care of the rest. See our Adv. Page 3. And since Mr. Rat is more than willing to eat and gnaw anything--from shoes to aluminum-- the damage he causes amounts to more than $250,- 000,000 in the U.S. yearly. The farmer is particularly affected by his destructive talon's. £y taking random bites from potatoes, apples, carrots, etc. (just small enough to contaminate the food), by gnawing holes in grain and corn sacks, by stealing hen eggs and by killing more baby chicks than he can eat, each rat costs' a farmer .over $'25 worth of damages - - a startling figure when you consider the largo rat population on an average farm. The rat causes grief for city dwellers too. In fact, he has gone so far as to black out entire sections by gnawing off the rubber insulation of electric wires. Kow can we rid our cities and farms of these destructive disease carriers? '1 It's not easy. / Exterminators say an old veteran rat can master almost any kind of trap. A highly intelligent mammal, Mr. Rat can easily learn to kick a trap around until it snaps shut; leisurely eat the bait. And since he can smell most poisons, it's easy for him to avoid them. To make matters worse, his promiscuous mating habits entity him to produce as many "as 350 million descendants in three years -- enough to discourage afiy exterminating efforts. But rat control is possible. If you have a rat on the premise, look for the rat's travel route. Since most of them like to travel undercover, check any holes in the ground, especially around water pipes, electric wires and air conditioners. Of course, any holes in walls or floors, broken windows or torn screens are obvious rat pathways. Once you uncover his private runway, place a bait near it. The best type is an anticoagulant (a chemical which thins the blood, causing internal bleeding) mixed with corn meal or rolled oats. But before it takes full effect, he must feed on it for five to ten days. And don't worry about his sense of smell. The anticoagulant has no odor CHURCH TOPIC What is the relationship between God and man? How does it help us overcome sin and disease? These are some of the questions to be explored at M c H e n r y C h r i s t i a n S c i e n c e church this Sunday. The subject is "Soul and Body."
