THE McHENRY W«drtesdayiNoveknber24,i905 By: Earl Walsh Thanksgiving has set our deadline ahead this week so away we go, Our new Warrior basketball coach. Glen Anderson, and his boys have given us two whirlwind games as a starter. First came a 1-point win at Grant High' Friday night, then a 1-point loss to Antioch here Saturday night. From what we saw, this team has made good progress for so early in the season. Looks to us like the big problem is the need of a 6'7" rebounder. Antioch had some big, rugged fellows who made the job hard for our Warriors under the boards. Rich Soda is the only seni(>^ on our squad if our information is correct. With quick hands and great determination, Rich played one whale of a game Saturday night. We didn't see the Grant game, but hear tell that Phil Schimke looked real good. We saw him intercept four passes Saturday. Phil is a Junior. .foall,-. Sunday, Dec. 5, serving from 7:30^ a.m. to 1 p.m. Mark it on your "calendar. You will enjoy it. Holiday seasons always do something to us. We probably have run out of ideas for listing things to be thankful for as this Thanksgiving Day approaches; but will give it a whirl. We Are Thankful For another birthday last Saturday. This was a special one and many people made it a happy day. For good and loyal friends. (Good friends see our good points and skip lightly over our faults.) $ For Cub fans. (Wouldn't our life be dull without them.) For January. (It makes us appreciate June.) For a dial on our TV that permits us to switch from those long-haired (wih bangs) song and wiggle boys. (We think they are boys!) That we didn't lose any hair since last Thanksgiving. (Didn't gain any either.) That newspapers publish pictures so the world can see the type of individuals who are leading our student parades. For snow tires and snow plows. (You take the shovel.) For newspapers. (Plenty of them on our doorstep these days.) That cigars are not listed as harmful like some of those other smokes we could name. To be able to call McHenry our home. For comic strips. (Hope you noticed that Dick Tracy, Diet Smith and Junior commute to the moon while our scientists struggle on with the problem.) McHENRY TOPS GRAM! UM, LOSE TO ANTIOCH SAT. 57-54. SCMMKE LEADING SCORER Tom Evans, Warrior play maker, can hit from outside and knows his way around the floor. Tom sank the winning basket with just 8 seconds left in the game at Grant. Another Junior on his way up. And another Junior is Paul Kilday, a fellow with potential and one who will be a big man in another year. John Reinboldt is the only Sophomore on thfe team, but is well developed and a natural athlete. Pat Camasta is a husky Junior who saw some action Saturday. We will be waching his progress. Like Pat, another husky fellow from the football wars who saw action is Rich Lossman. We will be watching the rest of the squad as games go bouncing alonj*. As we saw in "football, McHenry has a scarcity of Senior athletes this year. We have no idea where they are. There should be more in a school of some 1400 pupils. From the way the crowd was packed in at the home1 game, it looks like that new gym won't get here any too soon. One way to get a few more fans seated would be to move everybody south an inch or so and have those with coats on the seats pick them up. We remember one time the fans were asked to move closer together. Some moved north, some moved south, whichever seemed chummy. No help. Here is a chance to take Mom and the family out to a pancake breakfast. The Johnsburg Forester basketball team is sponsoring the breakfast at We sincerely hope and pray that each of us will have reason to be thankful for our blessings on this Thanksgiving Day of 1965. ft Outdoors by Jack Walsh The McHenry Sportsmen will hold their November meat shoot on their club grounds on the west shore of Pistakee Bay,' Sunday 28th beginning at 10 a.m. and winding up at dark. Target of the scatter-bore shooters will be tender fryers, fat young ducks, juicy steaks and holiday fruit cakes. Various contests open to the shotgunncrs include white bird shoots, protection shoots, jackrabbit shoots and Annie Oakleys. For those enthusiasts who just like to bang away. 25 bird practice shots will be on tap. The club's five electrically operated traps will be fully manned to accommodate all the gunmen and disappointed hunters who put in an appearance. without waiting, in what may turn out to be the club's last shoot of its kind this year. Cold weather might cause club officials to cancel the December meat shoots which have been scheduled. Hot refreshments and sandwiches will be available all day long. Watchers and hecklers are invited, too. Wally Man/., club trap chairman, expects a big turnout and has put in a hefty stock of meat iind clay birds, so that no\pne\will need to go away dissatisfied. The Vjarriors have a young scrappy basketball team that is going to win quite a few games and give the fans many thrills. Friday night the Warriors went to Grant and squeezed out a close one by two points 66-64 and then Saturday night they lost an even closer game by one point, 67-66. If they continue playing that type of ball, Warrior fans are likely to get heart trouble. Schimke Leading Scorer Against Grant, Phil Schimke was the leading scorer. Phil is developing into a fine player and demonstrated this both against Grant and Antioch. Against Grant he netted 18 points. Phil seems to have 'developed a nice touch on his shoots around the basket and no one should become too surprised if he increases his scoring as he gets a little more experience. Phil's big quarter was the second when he put in 9 of his 18 points. Paul Kilday followed Schimke n scoring Friday night with 13 points to his credit. Paul netted 4 points during both the first and second quarters. His final scoring spree came in the last quarter when he chalked up 5 more, with two field goals and a free throw. Tom Evans, a driving junior guard, was next in scoring with 12 points. Tom put in 4 field goals and 4 free throws for his points. Rich Soda, the only senior on the team, played fine ball and helped the team along with an 11 point effort. Rich put 5 of them in during the second quarter and 4 more in during the final period. - Pat Camasta and John Reinboldt completed the Warrior scoring with 6 points each. Both had 3 field goals. The Warrors had a fine balanced scoring attack, one that will be difficult for opponents to stop. It appears that the season will depend on a team effort and from all indications it appears the players will work together fineV The game's leading scorer was Pivonka from Grant with 20 points. He was followed by teammate Olerilee who had 18. b ft f tp Kilday 6 1 2 13 Reinboldt 3 0 5 6 Camasta 3 0 3 3 Schimke 8 2 0 18 Lossamn 0 0 1 0 Soda 4 3 1 11 Evans 4 4 2 12 28 10 14 66 Grant Poliakon 2 0 0 4 Smith 4 0 2 8 Olerilee 8 2 2 18 Pivonka 7 6 3 20 Klein 10 4 2 Reimers 4 3 1 11 26 11 12 64 Warriors 10 25 16 15--66 Grant 10 16 24 14--65 Saturday night the Warriors battled Antioch right down to the wire before going down to defeat 57-56. The Warriors trailed throughout most of the game but captured the lead late in the fourth quarter. Leading by a single point with less than a minute to go, the warriors had the ball taken away and lost the lead when Antioch scored. Shooting desperately to go ahead, the Warriors couldn't seem to put the needed shot in. They played pretty good ball however, and gave Antioch a game they will remember. Phil Schimke and Tom Evans -»led the scoring for the Warriors with 15 points each. Schimke got his on 6 field goals and 3 free throws, Evan's total was the result of 6 field goals and 3 free throws also. The balanced attack could be seen again as both Rich S o d a a n d J o h n R e i n b o l d t chalked up 10 points. Reinboldt had 5 field goals, Soda had one field goal and 8 free throws. Paul Kilday had 4 points and Rich Lossman had 2. Antioch's leading scorer was Tom Blackman who had 16 points. He was followed in scoring by his teammate Pat Sheehan with 14 points. The Warriors jumped \quickly into the lead anekit appeared that the match wohld be r^thing but a Warrior romp^However, Ela Vernon came "back strong and with two matches to go had a chance to win. Terry Morrison, Tony Koleno, and Jim Zvonar all pinned their men. Morrison, a tough 95 pounder, was especially impressive as he pinned his man in the first period. After leading 15-0, the Warriors lost the next two matches. One of -McHenry's best wrestlers, Sam Lamont, lost a tough decision 3-0. Then Forrest Viita was decisioned by his opponent. After droppingjthese two, the Warriors tied tHe next match j and lost the following two. Carl Perrino fought hard and had to battle a bloody nose most of the match. He did a fine job in tying. Both A1 Sulustio and Earl Hansen lost, Sulustino by decision, Hansen by a pin. With the Warriors leading 17-16, the McHenry wrestlers took the next three out of four ; matches. Mike Sobacki deci- : sioned his men and Jim Larsen hurriedly disposed of his by^ pin. . ...^ Even with these two' tories by the Warriors, Jfly Vernon could have still won-the* match' by pinning the last McHenry wrestlers. They didttfc* however. Warrior Bill Voltz tost* on a decision and then heayyT" weight Tom Dougherty finished the evening up with an uftpressive decision victory over his opponent.
