NEWS OF *PP5g^P|BPPSP»P""«»^r- K^,rCv- --JWSMlMMi ARTS - CRAFTS -CLASS HOMEMAKING CLASS .The special subjects of the McHenry Junior high school include seventh and eighth grade arts and crafts and home economics. It is the opinion of the instructors that such areas arc not separate from the school environment or special in their function, but instead part of the total education of children. The ability to control the ha"ds and the ability to control the mind are both important. The suc=_ cessful coordination of these two, results in a useful well rounded' individual. The special subjects are an attempt to coordinate these abilities and skills while at the same time give the students an opportunity to make objects and learn some skills which will prove useful in everyday living. Home Economics, in the Junior high school, is taught by Miss Saum. It is a required subject for all the eighth grade girls. Each girl has home economics five days a week, fortyone minutes each day. The home economics program provides the girls with several different activities concerning homemaking and faming high school home economics program. Aside from the areas of cooking and sewing, some time is also spent on areas such as family relationships, grooming, nutrition,, time and money management, baby sitting and understanding children. The activities in the program are designed to further the well being of each girl-iiv the family, in the school, iff the community and tti the florid at large. Program Object! The objectives of/the home economics program stress the personal, physical; social, emotional and intellectual develop* ment of junior high girls. Seventh grade arts and crafts is taught by Mr. Warren. It is required of all seventh grade students. Each student has arts and crafts five days a week, forty minutes per day. The seventh grade arts and crafts program consists of several active t i e s d i v i d e d t h r o u g h o u t t h e year. It is required of all eighth grade boys. , Each boy has arts and crafts five days a week, forty minutes a day. The eighth grade arts and crafts program consists of several activities divided throughout the year. Those activities offered are, woodworking, ceramics, copper enameling, metal etching and electricity. Set Goals The objectives or goals of arts and crafts for seventh and eighth grades are basically the same so they are stated here for both grades, to develop in each student: 1. Basic skills in the use of tools and materials involved in arts and crafts. 2. An understanding and basic experiences in the materials, tools, and processes involved in arts and crafts. 3. Self-discipline and the ability to follow directions successfully. 4. An appreciation, ability, and an understanding of the importance of good design and workmanship. 5. Habits of health and safety for self and others as related to the tools and equipment. 6. A willingness to share res p o n s i b i l i t i e s , e q u i p m e n t a n d supplies. The ability to think and plan for himself. 8. A worthwhile leisure time activity. It is important to understand that the purpose of these special subjects is not to make things, bu instead to learn how to make things. Mix a cup of vinegar and . a half teaspoon of ammonia with cold water, wring out a cloth and rub over your rug--brings out colors beautifully. The project is not of prime importance but instead is a byproduct of selected working and learning experiences. CHRISTMAS PACKAGES, dip a cotton swab stick in ink--neat, handy and disposable. I had a lot of trouble with loose hairs going down the drain every time I SHAMPOOED MY HAIR . But a piece of steel wool just placed over the drain opening now catches those hairs as the water runs out---and no more worrying about the drain clogging up. There is a bigger selection of DOLLS FOR CHRISTMAS this year than ever before--one cuter than the next--which can get pretty confusing for you doll-shoppers. But basically, the most important thing to consider when you're buying them is age of the little girl who's going to receive it. Babies and toddlers like soft .cuddly, simple dolls (they're not interested in its features or clothes). They should be small enough to be handled easily (a good rule of thumb is not to give a doll over 20" long to a child under 2). At about age 5, the girls like dolls they can bathe and dress and feed. However, remember that dolls under 12" with any but the simplest clothes can't be easily 7. When they get older--say, managed by youngsters under 7-8 years and up--they enjoy the teen fashion dolls because they're getting clothes con. scious. Of course, . you should also check the construction of the doll to see how well it's made-- whether it can be dressed easily, if the limbs move, etc. And be careful of giving dolls with rooted hair or small accessories (such as jewelry) to very young girls, especially under a year old, when they're at the age of putting everything in their mouths.
