R. Neiman, prominent attorney of Chicago, and a member of the Old Colony club, east of McHenry. At a meeting of the Kiwanis club held at Justen's hotel the club voted to purchase one of the art pictures recently displayed at the high school, to be hung in the school with the inscription, "From the McHenry Kiwanis club." The title of the picture is "The Builders" t being very appropriate as the Kiwanis slogan is "We Build". The McHenry Fire department will give another of their popular dances in Stoffel's hall. Glen Johnson's Harmony Syncopators will again furnish the music. The proceeds of the dance will be used to purchase another motor-driven truck for the department. Twenty-Five Years Ago (Taken from the files of December 5, 1940) As McHenry has no official weather bureau, no one has quite agreed how low the mercury dipped Monday hight There have been reports all the Vay from 10 degrees below to 24 degrees below the zero mark, and then that same night, along with frozen radiators and water pipes, came a blackout. No sirens screeched however. McHenry was, without lights for about a half hour because the sudden intense cold 'had snapped fee electric service wires. For several years now, at various times, musical minded persons have conceived the idea of forming a choral dub in McHenry. They were always confronted, however, with the problemyof finding enough who both sang\and were really interested '0 such an organization. Several weeks ago, though, the idea arose again among a few who feel that a really good choral society can be produced out of the material available in McHenry in the way of voices. The results obtained by contacting more than twentyfive men and women of various ages has been gratifying as more than twenty have expressed a willingness and a desire to belong to such an organization. There will be a meeting at 7:30 in the high school auditorium on Monday evening, Dec. 9. Raymond Howard of McHenry arrived at Glendale, Calif., to become a student of master mechanics at Curtis Wright Technical institute. The wood flew up and the nail punctured the flesh just below the knee and lodged in the bone. Mrs. Edward Matthews, son of Mrs. Delia Matthews of West M' Henry, and Miss Pauline Ashman, daughter of Mr. and ivirs. J. H. Asnman or wit. Vernon, 111., were married Nov. 30 at Burlington, Iowa. (Taken from the files of December 15, 1955) The community was shocked last Thursday, Dec. 8, to learn of the death of Warren Jones, who died in Columbus hospital, Chicago. Dorothy Marie Adams, who plays the piano and sings, will be a contestant on the amateur hour broadcast at 12:30 on Channel 7. She will play and sing a medley of "Winter Wonderland" and "White Christmas" on a children's holiday program Dec. 18. Donald Johnson was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce at the annual election meeting held Monday noon. Others named to office/ were Harry Dean, vice-presidentand Robert Stueben, secretary and treasurer. Work is going forward on the new junior high school located in the south part of the city, just west of Edgebrook school It is expected that the building will be completed and ready to open by next Sept. 1. Aviation Cadet Craig F. Baldwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. V. Jones, was awarded the silver wings of an Air Force pilot at the graduation of seventy-eight new pilots at Vance Air Force base Dec. 6. Robert Thompson received third place in a corn growing contest for vocational agriculture students in Section 6 of the F.F.A. That section includes Boone, McHenrjfr, Lake and Cook counties. The young man obtained his highest yield of 158.46 per acre under the supervision of W. E. Pictor, vocational agriculture instructor, and was given a cash award. Elmer T. Weissenborn of East River road, McHenry, has retired from the Chicago post office department after a period of service totalling thirty years. During that time he traveled 310,845 miles between McHenry and Chicago, according to bis tabulation on speedometer. RINGWOOD NEWS DELORES BRENNAN 653-9045 PRESENT ANNUAL SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR CHRISTMAS The annual Christmas program will be presented at tho Ringwood school on Friday evening at 8 p.m. Tho musical program will be under the direction of Mrs. Gloria Ritt, who has always done such a wonderful job. Bring the entire family. The 4 H Meeting Ringwood Sunshine 4- Hers met at the home of Mrs. Paul Walkington on Wednesday evening, Dec. 1. Tho Pledge to the Flag along with the 4-H pledge was l<>d by Cindy Bruce. Followed by the roll call and the minutes and treasurer's reports. Some awards and pins were awarded to those earning them during the past year. Mrs. Kopp was the guest of the evening, demonstrating candle making and decorating. Refreshments were served by Patty Brennan and Vannessa Samuelson. Lynn Tomlinson presented each with favors she had made for the holiday. The next meeting will be held Jan. 3, 1966. Hoffman-Hunt Nuptials Miss Sandy Hoffman became the bride of Roger Hunt on Saturday in a ceremony at the Ringwood Methodist church with Rev. Ronald Anderson officiating. Susie and Mike Hogan were the attendants. Also present were the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hoffman, and the froom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hunt. After a brief honeymoon in Omaha, the new Mr. and Mrs. Hunt will be residing at Pistakee Bay. Congratulations, Sandy and Rog. TRAIN-CAR ACCIDENT On Sunday evening, Harold Bell slid into the ditch alongside of tho tracks shortly before the evening train was due. John Lanway and Bill Brennan noticed the car, and upon learning that the train was approaching, told Mr. Bell just to get out of the car, in case it would be in the way. The car was not badly damaged, but the train did scrape the front of the car. Nobody was injured, since the car was not actually hit. The train was delayed' approximately 45 minutes, until, the car was pulled out. HERE 'N' THERE Guy Winters returned home after his surgery last Thursday, and is coming along fine, according to his-mom, Marian. However, he will not attend classes at school for another few days. Miss Mae Wiedrich and Mrs. Flora Carr went to Elgin on Saturday to atend the funeral of Mildred Munshaw, a former resident of Ringwood. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Seegert of Mineral Springs and Will Claxton of McHenry were Sunday dinner guests in the home of Mrs. Ruby Shepard. Mrs. Leonard Ackerman called on Marian Peet, Guy Winters and Axel Carlson on Thursday. All mere patients at Memorial hospital, Wood-1 stock. Mr. Carlson will still be in the hospital, so if you have a minute or two, how about dropping him a card? Mrs. Allen Ainger and son, David, of Hebron called on Mrs. Ruby Shepard on Saturday. Miss Mae Wiedrich and Mrs. Flora Carr called on Fanny Udall and Hazel Mann in Elgin on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Page of McHenry were dinner guests in the home of Mrs. Ruby Shepard on Tuesday evening. Tuesday afternoon visitors in Ringwood were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Freund of McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wiedrich and family of Burlington called on Mrs. Fred Wiedrich, Sr., on Sunday evening, and left Miss Patsy Wiedrich, who has been staying with her Grandmother for the past several weeks. The plan, entitled "Outdoor Recreation in Illinois," was drafted by the Department of Business and Economic Development in cooperation with the Department of Conservation. The former has been designated by Gov. Otto Kerner as the state's of. f|oi|il planning agency. / If the plan is approved by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developfnent, Illinois' public agencies can begin receiving federal funds for the acquisition and development of land parcels for recreation purposes. It is anticipated that these funds will be ^vailable by the first of next year. Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, director, Illinois Department of Public Health, has announced that the department is negotiating toward a contract with California Nuclear, Inc., for an Illinois storage facility for the disposal of radioactive waste materials. Dr. Yoder said that while no site for the facility has been selected' the area chosen probably would be more than 100 acres and would serve as a collection point for radioactive waste material from throughout the Midwest.
