Out -- Page Four Thtf*sday, January 27jl96fl( Sfy: fiaH Walsh Said Mrs. Ray Rode after the basketball game last Friday night-, "i wonder wnat t,ari will have to say in his column about this game?" Let's say it wasn't the kind of game that sends the crowd on tne way with smiles. We are accustomed to losing this year and have no complaints. lhe team is young and not made up as giants. In the first quarter, the Warriors were a wnoop-de-do ball club, scoring 25 points and zipping that bail cuound in style. In the second period the Streaks of VvoodsiocK turned on the steam and really streaked. Vve thought their sue anu maturity showed up at this time. The Warriors were seeing the score close in on them and started to shoot from too iar out. Woodstock took command in the last half and the game took a rough t,urn. Old White Sox Fan And Young The above picture was taken recently at Rockford as "So I Hear" talked with Pete Ward, star third baseman, about the White Sox and their plans for a pennant in '66. They plan to win! ? BarringtonTo Host Wrestling Tournament Barrington "high school will host its eighth annual freshm e nf invitational x wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan; 29, at the high school gymnasium. Being one of the oldest tournaments of its kind in the area, the event annually attracts ..many scfyoolp of the northwest suburban area. Competing this year in addition to the host school, are freshmen wrestlers from Cary-Grove,, Conant, Crystal Lake, Dundee,' L a b e r t y v i l l e , M c H e n r y , a n d Mundelein high schools. First round action is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by the sdmi-final matches. At 3 p.m., third and fourth place matches will begin followed by the finals. Team trophies will be awarded tr> the first and second place teams. In addition, individual awards will be given for the first four places in each weight division. WARRIORS START FAST. BUT STILL LOSE TO WOODSTOCK 75 • 61 SODA, CHIMKE LEAD SCORING It would be narrow to think our own boys didn't get in a few jabs, out an eioow in Evans' stomach lit the fuse when the game was near tne end. ^ Two players tangled arid were put out of tne game. Then one of our subs put on/ a temper tantrum and Coach derson rightly set him 01/ the bench. We purposely omit names. After all, we must remember that spirited young athletes let loose once in a while. As usual, each crowd thought their boys were right. As tor us, we think they were both wrong. Rivalry between schools is to be desired. In the past, we have maintained that the players were the best sports in the gym. We saw opposing players get together at the end of the game and the world seemed, all right. We like a good fight in the ring with boxing gloves. On the basketball floor, we like to see the boys play basketball. Can't say there were no battles on the floor way back in our day. But, things worked out and the world did not come to an end. So. That's what we have to say about the game of basketball of last week. It didn't leave a sweet taste in our mouth. Now for the game with Crystal Lake here Friday night. When Donald Wattles asked us for a prediction last week, vve told him McHenry would win. We turned around to give him that "I told you so" look early in the game, then pulled in our neck as the game progressed. Donald hasn't asked us this week. Let's just say the Warriors will win this one by 5 or 6 points, about 60 to 54. If that doesn't turn out right you may recognize the north side-of a lellow going south tout the back doon after the game. Haven't had a card this year from the sunny south showing bathing beauties and notation "Wish you were here". We did have a enrd from tarry Geicr from Korea and appreciate the thought. Of course, Larry didn't give us that "Wish you wore here" business. We wish YOU were HERE, Larry. Evelyn Anderson Henke, now a Woodstock resident, came over to say hello at the game Fans who watched McHenry fall again to the hands of the Woodstock Blue Streaks Friday night must of wondered what happened to the Warrior team that played the first quarter. The Warriors were fantastic during the first stanza as they outscored Woodstock 25-18. However, immediately starting the second stanza the Warriors cooled off and lost a seven point lead by the end of the period. At half time they, led Woodstock 33-33. The Streaks out rebounded and out shot the Warriors during the*? last two periods and came up with a 75- 62 victory. * Streaks Control Boards Woodstock's secret to success was controlling the backboar d s. McHenry players could not cope with Woodstock's muscle under the basket and as a result the Streaks were allowed three and four shots at their own nets. The Warriors came up with only 24 rebounds to 35 for the Streaks. Senior. - Rich Soda again led the Warrior attack. Rich played good ball and netted 15 points. Almost all of his M-uring occurred in the last half. Except for the Dun- Friday night. She has a son | playing on the Soph team. As soon as he starts putting two good halves together, the Warriors might come up with another victory. The Warrior scoring was fairly even. Carstcns got 10 points, Schimke netted 12, EVans had 11. and Reinboldt contributed 9. Paul Kilday completed the scoring with 5 points. The main problems for McHenry were named Jim Knox and Jim Johnson. Knox led his team in the first half with 17 points. Johnson took his ream to victory by^petting 20 in the second half. Basketball is an important aspect of the school program because it requires many hours from the lives of each boy on the squad and what each team member learns during those hours is important. Also, like the band, the football, wrestling, baseball, • and track squads, the basketball team represents the school and community to outsiders. The goal of the Warrjors basketball team tain spirit which to call the "Chnmnionship Tradition." Such spirit should be demonstrated in defeat as well as in victory, in practice as well as in play, and off the court as well as on the court. Because of our record, we have had more opportunity, more than any coach or team would desire, to demonstrate the "Championship Tradition" in defeat more than in victory. Due to our poor record thus far, there has been a lack of adult- support. I realize that no one likes to associate with a loser, but. the loser needs the help most. Support the WSrriors, YOUR TEAM. Join the "Championship Tradition" win or lose. The team needs it now. The club is especially fortunate in having Miss Phoebe Romberger and Miss Marie DeGref of Wonder Lake back again for this program. They will show slides of last summer's canoe trip on Sawbill Lake, Minn., and how they portaged from one small lake to another in this scenic wilderness of Minnesota. This promises to be a very enjoyable evening. Serving on the refreshment committee for the February meeting are Mrs. Arthur Rohr. Mrs. Edward Thennes and Mrs. William Nimsgern. The defense was just nj^rr velous the first half as they iveht in at half-time leading 37-4. To start the second half something odd happened with St. Monica's only sending one man to jump and the rest set up the defense, but it still didn't bother the Irish as they continued scoring and at the end of the third quarter it was St. Pat's 51 and St. Monica's 14.
