Section Two -- Page Pour THE McHENRY PLAlNDEALEfr Thursday, February 17,1986 TAX FACTS Q - For some reason I didn't get my 1040 forms in the mail. Maybe it was because wie moved last year. Where can I get the ones I need? A - Federal lax forms are available in many banks, post offices and from any local Internal Revenue Service office. Q - Are income tax rates any lower this year? A • The tax rates you will lie paying on your 1965 income are appreciably lower than the rates in effect on 1964 income. The lower rates on 1965 income became effective Jan. 1, 1965. These rates range from 14 percent to 70 percent compared to the 1964 range of 16 percent to 77 percent. Q- I want to file early since. I have a refund coming. However, I haven't gotten my W-2 yet. Is there anything I can do. to speed it up? A- The law requires employers to issue W-2 forms by the end of January. If you haven't received it by that date ask him about it. Remember that you must enclose with your tax return copy R of a W-2 form from each of your employers if you had more than one last year. Q - How should I make out my check for the balance I owe? A - Checks should be made out to the ' Internal Revenue Service. Never .send .cash through the mails. If it is lost you will have no record that the payment was made. Q - On a joint return, do I have to list my wife's social security number ?She does not work but received a few dollars in dividends. A • Your wife's social security number should be listed. If she does not have one, she should apply for a number to the Social Security Administration, using a Form SS-5. Even though she may not work, any separate income she receives from stock investments, savings accounts or similar sources makes It necessary for her to have a .number. Ranks and corporations are required to report dividend and interest payments to the Internal Revenue Service, identifying the payees by both name and social security number. Q - What state and local taxes are deductible on my federal tax return? A • State and local income taxes, -geaeral sale* taxes, state gasoline taxes, annual ad valorem personal property taxes, and real estate taxes levied for the general welfare are deductible. Deductions are generally not allowed for s. automobile tags based on other than the value of your car, drivers licenses, state and local Sales taxes specifically on alcoholic beverages, tobacco and certain miscellanious taxes. You will find further details on what is and is not deductible in the 1040 instruction booklet. Q - How can I tell whether I'm qualified to use the simple card Form 1040A? A - The instruction booklet covers this. Generally speaking, Form SEVEHE WEATHER KEEPS TCP DRIVE BELOW '66 GOAL "The total goal for this year's United Cerebral Palsy drive, which was set for $12,000, is running below whfv} was originally hoped," reported Mrs. John L. Boehm, president of the affiliate. In December, at '"'the time the mailing was made to the larger manufacturing plants and certain businesses and clubs, it was hoped that the goal could be reached. The fine weather held up almost until the date of the drive - Jan. 9 - and then winter de-, scended upon McHenry county, inadvertantly spoiling the chance of this organization to reach its goal. Due to problems of space, it is impossible to list the totals for all ureas, but some figures are available. Mail campaign receipts to elate are $920.50; income from cannisters and cards, $1,266.50; gross income from sock hop and kick-off din- 3^r (before expenses) $1,564.25; oor-to-door drive total to date, $4,866.44, making a total drive to date of $8,580.19. AH areas have reported in, with the exception of the cities of Algonquin and Cary and several small areas around McHenry. The Crystal Lake and Woodstock drives were quite low this year in comparison to prior years due to the lack of sufficient volunteers. Gratitude has been expressed to all teen-agers in the county who worked. The P i s t a k e e Highlands Teen club, the Highland Shores Teen club, boys and girls from all the high schools who worked to cover areas where adult volunteers could not be found. The budget of this agency is high (.68 per cent of the funds are used in McHenry county); the goal of the drive must therefore be high if Obligations are to be met. ^ 7 1040A cannot be used if: 1- deductions are itemized 2- income is $10,000 or over 5- more than $3,00 of income is not subject to withholding tax 4- special tax fetatus or tax credits are claimed 5. a fiscal year or accrual accounting method is used 6- you are delinquent in filing your return. Q - I was off the job for two months last year with a kidney infection. Is the $80 a week I received in sick pay deductible 7^ A - If the $80 a week you received was 75 percent or less of your normal salary and you were hospitalized at least one day, you may deduct $75 a week for. the first 30 days of your absence and $80 a week thereafter. If you were not hospitalized, nothing can be deducted until after a 7 day waiting period, begining with the first day "of work you missed, tfien you may deduct $75 j» week for the next 28 days, and the full $80 thereafter. However, if the $80 a week you receive was more than 75 percent of your normal salary then the waiting period is 30 days from the first day of absence from work, and nothing may >>e deducted until that period is up. This will be true whether or not you are hospitalized. The maximum amount deductible after the first 30 days is $100 per week. Q - I have a refund coming. Can I split it up and take part in cash and part in savings bonds? A - No. ' You must elect to take your refund either in cash or bonds. However, where bonds are elected, any excess amount above the cost of the maximum number of bonds will be refunded in cash. You may elect to have part of the overpayment applied , to next year's estimated tax, and the rest taken either in cash or bond. Q - How much can I receive in dividends before they become taxable? A - Individuals may now receive up to $100 in dividends of a taxable domestic corporation before they become taxa b l e . F o r m a r r i e d c o u p l e s where both have dividends, each may receive up to $100 in qualified dividends tax-free. We ask, too, that one individual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We reserve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectionable taste.) THE PRESENT CRISIS "How many of you have watched the little ants work? They have two opposing armies and first work hard in the sand to build tunnels and whatever they need for their little ant lives, then when all is completed they have a war, army against army, and destroy all" that they worked for. "This is 1966. 1 "I ask this question, when are we going to imitate the little insects and stop slaughtering each other? It seems to me that we who have reached almost the height of civilization should find a way to complete this hassle* without losing the best of our citizens without really knowing why. "I don't believe in picketing or rabble-rousing, but I want to remind all of you that we are blessed in this U.S.A. with .the freedom to express our thoughts without fear. Take your pen and write a letter to your congressman and let him know how you feel about this crisis. Now is the time. Maybe your idea will save all of us from future wars. After all we are hooing that these young people will be the future citizens who will take part in making our policy. Just a letter and a five cent stamp. Is it worth it? Think it over.
