Sect!©® One ^--Pag*Four THE McHENHY PLAINDEALER Thurptfay, February 17,180S., 90 I HEAR... In Skating Contest Bfr: Kid Wslah We must put our friend and neighbor, Bill Kreutzer, at the head of the class this week. Bill hit the pins to the merry tune of 696 (actual pins) in the Forester bowling tournament. Wow! He must be due for TV appearances. For you bowlers who struggle for a game of say 170, just think what it takes to bowl a series with a 232 average. The old southpaw must have had his wing in shape. While on the subject of bowling, somebody told us Betty Clark, was the only gal bowling with 59 men last Thursday night at McHenry Rec. It seems John Looze was out of town so Betty subbed. Bet John will never get back in the lineup. The 20th annual C.O.f. basketball tournament starts in the MCHS gym, Sunday, Feb. 27. The meet continues March 6th, and ,13th. This is a big event in the sports calendar. More next week. It makes us think that spring cannot be far behind. The Dundee basketball team will be here Friday night to meet our Warriors. It was termed an upset when Dundee knocked off favored Libertyville last Saturday night. Upset or no upset, when Dundee's zone defense failed to stop Libertyville they switched to man-to-man and bottled up the scoring. Just read about a fellow behind the iron curtain who was sentenced to seven years of hard labor for criticizing the government. We could get a lot of work done free in this country if all the- sound-off guys were handed a pick and shovel. But, this is a democracy in which we live. May it improve, but never be destroyed. Time ran out on us this week. Will try to do better next time. The businessman and his teenage daughter were listening to a hot rock and roll band. "Did you ever hear anything like it?" asked the daughter with obvious admiration. "Only once," replied her father. "That was when a truck loaded with live ducks hit a freight car full of empty cream cans." IRISH SUFFER TWO DEFEATS DURING BUSY WEEKEND Things just didn't go very well over the weekend for the Irish. They went to Wauconda Friday in high hopes, but having lost LaFontaine and Blenner early in the fourth quarter due to fouls, they lost their first conference game of the season 59-49. The news of Ringlestetter's accident, which will keep him out of action for a week, made little difference in their second game .as they strolled through Sacred Heart of Aurora, 60-40. The loss of Ringelstetter and Merkel, who were ill, was even more keenly felt on Sunday as they lost their second game of the year, and first non-conference game, to Visitation School of Kewanee, 111., 60-52, after a 150 mile trip of three hours. Almost immediately after their game they left Kewanee for Elgin in order to play in the first round of the diocesan tournament agaihst St. Peter and Paul of Cary. Tired as they were from one game Friday, another Saturday and already one on Sunday, they found little competition with St. Peter and Paul as they won 36-13. Now the record for St. Pat's basketball team is 20 wins and 2 defeats. The scorers for the four games were: Blenner-81, La- Fontaine - 40, Ringelstetter-18, Merkel-17, Larkin-14, Elliot - 7, Whiting - 8, Lavin-4, £tilling-3, Ruemelin-2, and Bartos-2. FINISH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT KID AT BARRMGTON. SECTIONAL NEXT! Scenes similar to the one above were repeated throughout last Sunday, Feb. 13, when the 1966 McHenry invitational skating championships were held at the Just For Fun roller rink on Front street. Pictured above in the sub-novice and intermediate Fours classification are Dale Marzano and Pamela Draws and-Chuck Olcott and Nancy Bardo, all of McHenry. In addition to figure classes for men and women, there were many contests in a variety of dances. SPOUTS. UBBOTVUi WARRIORS T McHENRY m CE DUNDEE IIS FRIDAY. LAST CONFERENCE GAME After upsetting Zion the week before, our Warriors were unable to continue their winning ways against a superior Libertyville squad. McHenry was outclassed by the Wildcats on Libertyville's court by a 82- 53 score. The Warriors fell behind immediately and never seoriusly threatened throughout the game. They were out-, scored by the Wildcats by a large margin in the first, three periods and by two points in the last stanza. The loss kept the Warriors in last place, one game behind Dundee. This week the Warriors will have a chance to tie the Cardunals in conference standings when they host Dundee on Friday night. About the only McHenry player to hit with any consistency against Libertyville was sophomore John Reinboldt. John hit for 16 points in the losing cause. The next high scorer for the Warriors was Rich Soda. Rich netted only 10 points, well below his average. Meanwhile Libertyville players were showing their class as they hit well from everywhere. Four Libertyville players scored in double figures and the consistency simply was too much for McHenry. The Blades played much improved hockey over the games of the past two weeks. It was, however, the third period which once again snatched the victory which seemed sure to come. The Blades lead after the first period by a score of 3-1 The first goal was beautifully set up by Dave Zeiger when he dug the puck out from in back of the net and sent a; beautiful centering pass onto the stick of Mike Mecko who rippled the cords with a shot from 8 feet out. Dan Gianotti made the score 2-0 after taking a pass from Frank Lobaza and firing the disc past the prostrate form of the Hab goalie. The Habs then scored their first of the night on a rebound shot. Mike Phaelen closed out the scoring in the period when he skated in on a breakaway after taking a pass from Dave Lon Smith. The Blades then scored their final two goals of the night, both coming off the stick of Dave Zeiger. The first goal was an unasssisted beauty, and the second was assisted by Rich Albright. The Habs then scored two goals in the period and two more in the third period to gain themselves, a tie for the evening's work. The Blades had a total of 32 shots on goal during the game. The Habs had a total of 25 shots on the Blades goal. This is a much better output of shots from the Blades than in weeks prior to this. The Blades, next Sunday, play what is without much doubt one of the most important games of the entire season. Their opponents arc the Highland Park Kodaks, who are at t h i s t i m e i n s e c o n d p l a c e breathing down the necks of the Blades. If the Blades win this contest, they are all but assured of the ^op spot in the league. They have only one regular season game remaining after the Kodak game, against •he Blue Streaks on Feb. 27. The Blades would like a lot of fan support at this game, so tryfi and make it if at all possible. The game time is the usual 8 p.m. at the Fox Valley Stadium, routes 25 and 72 in Dundee. decisioned Schuerr (McH) 13-6 Hwt.
