\ Section Two --J*age Six THE McHENltY PLAINDEALER Thursday, February 24,1966 AUDUBON COUNTY CHAPTER HOLDS MEMBER DRIVE A membership drive is presently being conducted by the ivic Henry county chapter of the Illinois Audubon society. Since the chapter is affiliated with the state society, membership in the local club affords the bearer the benefits of both organizations; the field trips, tneetings and newsletter of the local group and the Illinois Audubon society bulletin newsletter and special activities of the state group. Chapter President Mrs. Kenneth Fiske states that "through this affiliation, we have contact with leading ornithologists in the mid-west and are offered access to areas closed to the general public. We may participate in activities of other nature clubs, and meetings of the Inland Bird Banding Association, Illinois Dunesland Presservation society and Great Lakes Falconers club." The McHenry county chapter was organized to enjoy and study wild birdlife and further the conservation of natural resources. Evening meetings are held in January and February with programs devoted to conservation and Saturday morning field trips are held during remaining months., Aside from these- activities, the chapter is cooperating in the annual National Audubon society's Christmas bird count; aids in Bald Eagle research through donations of commemorative stamps; participating in the annual nesting census which provides data for use in government and private scientific surveys and studies: and has established a Bluebird Trail aimed at providing nesting sites for this bird and to increase its numbers in Illinois. The McHenry county chapteris the only nature-conservation group in the county and is actively concerned with local and state conservation issues. Because of the growth of metropolitan area population and the destruction of open spaces, this aspect of any nature group is of prime importance and demands popular support. Membership may be obtained by contacting Mrs. Kenneth Fiske or Mrs. V.'illiam Carrol, Jr. GUEST SPEAKER Elly M. Peterson,Republican State Central committee chairman of Michigan, will be the guest speaker March 4th at Long Grove country club.
