The difference is the interest you must report on yiur return, assuming you Sgdn't reported it annually as 44--was accruing. """Q -- Does last year's exawe tax cut save me anything fftt my income tax? -- No. Federal excise •kps paid on things for perianal or family use have ne- 1W been deductible for individual income tax purposes so tlT eexelse tax cut will have no effect. •"Q -- I have to pay a baby- SJJJor for my little girl while Son working since she isn't oM enough for school yet. Do tjKot any deduction for whnt I~4i ave to pay for this pur- 2»e? -- Possibly. You m»v deduct up to $600 as a child deduction, if you qualify. This deduction is explained in the instruction booklet ac- QjjfTipanying the 1040 tax forms. 2"The deduction is limited to lliluit you spent, but not more than $600 for one child or disabled dependent, and $900 2qH two or more children or disabled dependents. Generallyrtlfe maximum combined in- Come limit for married couples claiming this deduction is ffl.uOO. For every dollar earned over that amount, the deduction must be reduced $1. However, there are certain exceptions to this rule. **Q -- How can you tell a fly?by-night tax return specialist from one who is reliable and honest? -A --Here are a few things far-look for: "1 -- avoid the man who ' - "guarantees^ you a re- ^ fund. 3L-- be on guard if he sug- »' gests that the refund be ^ sent to his address -- never sign a blank tax form. -- don't sign a form that has been prepared in pencil, the figures could be easily ©laamgefl. "g -- ask the advisor to sign r- the return he has prepared. "Utemember that when you a«C someone to help you prepare a return, you are still i&glly responsible for every item on the return. Q -- How does the $100 floor on casualty and theft losses work? I had several small losses that cost me nearly $400 in total last year. Can I combine them and just subtract the $100 from the total A -- No. Casualty and theft losses or property used for bursed losses over $100 are deductible on a joint return if properly substantiated. Remember a theft loss should ordinarily be reported to the police. Also, you must be able to prove that you actually suffered a loss, and to establish the value of the articles involved. Q -- Da you need to h^ve records of your medical bills, contributions and other items when you take the minimum s tandard deduction ? A -- No you don't. The minimum standard deduction, like the 10% standard deduction, makes it unnecessary for taxpayers to Itemize or substantiate deductions. Q -- Where should I mail my return? A -- Instructions for mailing returns are given In the 1040 instruction booklet. You will find the proper address listed there. CHRISTIAN SERVICE THEME Luke's reverent account of the divine origin of Jesus is the opening theme of the service in McHenry Christian Science church this Sunday on the subject: "Christ Jesus." The Lesson-Sermon continues with Mark's record of Jesus' baptism in the river Jordan when "the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying. Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And it culminates in John's powerful rhetorical question: "Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?" Dr. SIMS says... SAFEGUARD YOUR HEALTH A PUBLIC SERVICE OF THE tUNOIS 8TATE MEDICAL SOCIETY DON'T WORRY ABOUT INFANT'S BIRTHMARK If your infant has a strawberry birthmark, don't worry. There's an excellent chance it will disappear on its own-- without medical treatment. Characterized by a soft and compressible refd lesion elevated above the skin's surface, this birthmark (m e d i cally known as an immature hemangioma) truly resembles a strawberry. Although it may grow rapidly during your infant's first year, don't let this frighten you. The size will eventually reach a point where it remains unchanged, usually around 18 months of age, and then reduces. But regression is very slow. It may take two to six years before the strawberry mark disappears. By age 7, however, over 70 percent of these marks completely disappear, leaving absolutely no trace behind. Another type of birthmark that may disappear on its own is the cavernous hemangioma. This type of birthmark involves blood vessels conglomerated beneath the skin's surface which elevate the skin and give it a bluish color. This birthmark's course of regression usually is similar to' the strawberry mark; but it may leave a trace. This is because some of the overlying skin may remain as a soft hanging "pouch." In some cases, the appearance of the pouch may improve on its own over the years. If it doesn't improve, plastic surgery may be considered. Unfortunately, the most common type of birthmark -- the portwine stain (capillary hemangioma) -- rarely disappears or fades with age. However, it often appears on the back of the scalp where it is covered by hair. Should this redish mark appear on the face, certain medical treatments may be used with varying success. Perhaps the cheapest and safest treatment is to camouflage the mark with cosmetic creams prepared specifically for this purpose. What causes birthmarks? « ^ There are many superstitions which hold that these marks are caused by an event in the mother's life during pregnancy -- such as a frightening experience, a bad dream, etc. There is absolutely no truth to this! Some authorities believe the marks may be caused by some defect ifi the child's development -- perhaps a hereditary defect -- which prevents the small blood vessels of the outer skin to develop properly. The exact cause, however, has not yet been determined. Rehorst of Rt. 2, Richmond, and Granville C. Sornson of Fox River Grove, both for three violations. Secretary of State Paul Powell has announced the Drivers License division of his office has rescinded the revocation of the license of Larry L. Nearly 2,000 cases of measles were reported in the state during January, a higher total than was reported in any January since 1962, according to Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Dr. Yoder urged parents to have their children immunized against measles. The vaccine is recommended for all children nine months of age and older, including those in their early teens who have never had measles. Vaccine may be used as late as the tenth day after exposure.
