If?, occurred the death of Mrs. Ellen? Frisby, a pioner settler and charter member of St. Patrick's church. Ellen Knox Frisby was born in Ireland in the city of Kilmacow, County of Kilkenny, April 9, 1835. Thirty-five public spirited women met at the home of Mrs. F.'C. Cobb on, Elgin road Feb. 17 for the purpose of forming an organization to be known as the Woman's Improvement association dedicated to the purpose of assisting the city in necessary improvements and any movement within their ability to assist which may help beautify McHenry and make it a better place to live in. The officers elected were President, Mrs. Florence Cobb, Vice-President, Mrs. Barbara Krause, Secretary, Mrs. Alice Lindsay, Treasurer, Mrs. May Spencer. Its first entertainment wflf be a card party at the home of Mrs. Charles Rietsel. Augustine Freund of Johnsburg, graduate of McHenry Community high school, is now employed by the West McHenry state bank. The pupils of the primary room of the Ringwood school with thp help of their mothers ort Feb. 12 planned and executed a most enjoyable surprise on their teacher, Miss Arline M. Harrison. A Valentine box was enjoyed after which ice cream and cake were served by the mothers. A daughter was born to,Mr. and Mrs. George Weber Feb. 20. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the edition of Feb. 20. 1941) In a release from Washington last. Thursday the Department of Commerce Bureau of Census disclosed that the 1940 census of McHenry township is 3,610. Since there are 1,- 596 people within the city limits of McHenry, this shows MSCULLOM LI - NE EVE LEVESQU1 S85-S191 DEFEAT, PASS AHD j TABLE ORDINAMCES AT VILLAGE BOARD An ordinance which would have increased the price of dog licenses by one dollar was defeated by the village board at the meeting held Monday, Feb. 21, in the beachhouse. All trustees were present except Arthur Nelson. The measure was defeated 3 to 2. Revenue to the village will be increased with the collection of the one half of one percent retail sales taxi This men sure passed unanimously. An ordinance which was discussed at a previous meeting Wiih brought before the trustees for a vote cnncerning the Ikenslng of food handling ONt'ibllshments of which there nre three In the village. The measure would have meant an increase of revenue of $45. The ordinance was tabled by the board. Road commissioner Harry Lock will obtain bids for drainage work to be done at Eastwood and W. Orchard Drive. A resident took time off from work to attend the board meeting and proposed that cats be licensed. The topic was put on the agenda snd will be brought up at the next meeting. Also proposed was a measure to increase the price of vehicle stickers. This, too, will be brought up for discussion at the March meeting. According to J. R. Levesque, there will bo a meeting of the clean streams commissipn at the American Legion Home on Wednesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The next meeting of the president and Irustees will be held Monday, March 21, at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. The public is invited. There was a lively group of interested residents and it is gratifying to see the^se people taking an interest in village affairs. More should come. Heart Fund Drive Realizes over $100 A total of $110.54 was collected during the Heart Fund drive in the village recently. Mrs. Theresa Sc-hultz was chairman of the drive and had high praise for the volunteer workers who did such a fine job. Top collectors were Mrs. Helen Streskc collecting $16.75 and Lynne Schultz turning in SI2. Other women and young ladies who helped were Karen McKim, Mrs. George Luto and daughter, Mary Beth, Dawn Parenti, Geni Scarbrough, L o u i s e M a t t h e s i u s , J a c k i e Fisher, Kathy Klapperich, Sandy Brennun, Sandy Belts and Petey Schmidt. Hospital Patients Mrs. Elsie Nelson was taken to the McHenry hospital last Sunday morning after feeling ill. She is in for tests and observation. Whitey Glimm is still hospitalized at the Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, 111, He has been confined for over three weeks. >Ladies Meet Next Week The Ladies of the Lake 4will meet next Thursday, March 10, in the beachhouse. All women of the community are cordially invited. Most of these reside near the lakes or along the river in this township. When the weather man came around Sunday, Feb. 16, in the guise of a blizzard, local folks buttoned up their overcoats and prayed that the storm would not result in a repetition of the scenes in this vicinity just five years ago. The snow, which fell steadily all day Sunday, vVas accompanied by a gale. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Conway, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Conway, Mrs. Theresa Cairns and Richard and Beatrice Williams were among those from McHenry who attended the annual masquerade ball sponsored by the Crystal Lake V.F.W. Drum and Bugle Corps at Crystal Lake Saturday evening. Glynn W. Smith, 68 years old, a native of Ringwood, died in a Chicago hospital last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Rothermel of Riverside Drive announce the engagement of their daughter, Catherine, to Mr .Fredrick Meyer, son of Mrs. Anna Meyer. Mrs. M. L. Schoenholtz entertained several guests at a delicious chicken dinner Tuesday evening in honor of her husband on the occasion of his birthday. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Thursday, March 1, 1956) Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fritz of Johnsburg who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Feb. 28 with forty- five relatives and friends. Timothy Ballowe, a sixth grade student at St. Mary's school, suffered a fractured skull and has been confined to Memorial hospital. He was sliding down hill near the water tower on Waukegan street when the sled on which he was riding struck a post. •McHenry friends learned with sorrow this week of the untimely death of Theodore Busch, 24, of Richmond, formerly of Spring Grove, who was killed in an accident in Korea Feb. 22. The Clarence Gath home in Mineral Springs subdivision south east of McHenry was burglarized some time during February, the place ransacked and several valuable articles taken. Two men, Kenneth Price and Roy Erber, were injured Wednesday morning when a scaffold on a new home in Cooney Heights broke and fell to the ground. W h a t a b o u t p o l i t i c a l contributions. Are they deductible? A. No. The law does not permit deductions for contributions to political parties. Q. No. Part of this . total tax figure is for federal excise taxes, which are not deductible. Only state and local taxes are deductible. Look on page 9 of the 1040 instructions for the amount you may deduct for gas taxes in this state. Q. If you use a diaper service on the advice of a doctor can this cost be included with your medical expenses? A. No. Even though diaper services may have some relationship to medical care, they are not considered deductible medical expenses. Q. My wife's salary came to pital and Roy Erber suffered a broken left wrsit and cuts about the face. Friends in this communrty extended congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. A return is not required from an individual if his total Income is less than $600. However, if you and your wife file a joint return iill her income must be reported on the return. Also, if income tax has been withheld from her pay, she would have to file a return to get a refund of the amount withheld. Q. Where do you report alimony income on the return? A. It should be reported on line 8, part II, page 2 of Form 1040. This is also where other income such as state tax refunds, prizes and the like should be reported. Q. I'm moving next month and I have a refund coming. Should I put my new address on the return? A. Yes, use your new address. One of the major reasons for delay in receiving refund is that we do not have the correct address. Put your old address In the space provided on the return, just below the block for name and address. Q. How do you avoid getting bad tax advice? This happened to a friend of mine last year and it was pretty expensive. A. Most tax advisers are competent. Local accounting and legal societies will be able to supply you with a list of qualified tax advisers in this - area. Also your Internal Revenue office stands ready to help you. Q. Can I deduct the federal tax I pay on my phone bill? A. No. This is an excise tax and is not deductible. Q. Who is liable for tax on interest on savings bonds bought for a child? A. It depends on how the bonds are registered. If the child is listed as co-towner on the bond, the purchaser Is liable for tax on the interest. If the child is sole owner the parent as beneficiary, the child assumes the tax liability. Q. My friend filed a tax return although His income was under $600. Does that mean I will have to file even though I earned less than $600? A. If you had income tax withheld, a return must be filed to obtain a refund. If you had ' $400 or more of net inoome from self-employment then a tax return must be filed. Use Schedules C and C-3 to report self-employment income and attach them to Form 1040 to do this. If you have no refund coming and no-self-employment income to report, then no return is necessary. Q. I use my car for business. You may deduct 10 cents a mile for the first 15,000 miles of business use and 7 cents a mile thereafter in lieu of actual expenses and depredation. Check your 1040 Instructions to be sure you qualify for this deduction. If you do qualify, a speedometer reading: at the beginning and end of each businesstrip will establish the amount you can deduct. Tolls and parking fees are deductible in addition to the mileage allowance. Q. How much of the tax I pay on whiskey can I deduct? A. No deduction is allowed on an individual non-business return for Federal, state or local taxes on alcoholic beverages. Q. Our two daughters are very busy baby-sitting.
