Girl Scout Troop 320 We opened with the pledge to the flag and the Girl Scout promise. Topics for discussion were the cookie sale and our camping trip. A practice session on fixing a bed roll was held. We also discussed badge work as we are having a court of honor at our next meeting. Mrs. Patterson, who is helping us with our painting and drawing badge, came and started our lessons. Before we began, she showed us different kinds of pencils and how to care for them. As we are starting with pencil sketching, we were shown how to prepare the paper for the& sketch. 'A still life of a teddy bear and blocks were set up for all the girls to draw. All the things we learn for this badge will be used for the Girl Scout Fun Fair next April. Stork-Gram A tiny bundle of femininity was deposited at McHenry hospital for Robert and Margo Leone on Thursday, March 2. The lovely little lady will be known to her admirers as Robin Helen. She tipped the scale at a dainty 6 lb. 9 oz. She has a big sister, Tammy, to £elp her grow. Sympathy Words just cannot express the feeling which descended over our subdivision' last week when the dreadful news about the accident which took the lives of Dee Barwig and her daughter, Debbie, and put Marge Webber and her son, Mark, in the hospital was heard. Our very deepest sympathy is extended to Ronald Barwig ^nd the entire family on their loss. It will be many weeks before Marge will be able to bo up and out but Mark is improving steadily. We hope the very best for these two in a speedy recovery. Strolling Through the Park Bev Wickenkamp had a few ladies in for lunch on Monday to help Dolores Rogers celebrate her birthday. Joan Burmann and Mary Lou Wilkins were the ladies involved. Our grandma and grandpa Meurer came out for the weekend and short visit. I went in to Maywood on Saturday and picked them up and on Sunday, Ron's cousin, Florence Blum, and children and Aunt Laura Peters came out to take them home. A great honor was bestowed upon Joann Schabow when she became the recipient of the Marian Award given for fulfilling the special Cadette requirements tor this religions medal. Ceremonies were held at St. James church in Rockford and medals were given to 169 girls of the county. Two other girls from this area also received the medal. The only previous recipient was Kathy Bec ker who earned it last year. After the ceremonies, the Schabow family took Joann out to dinner and then attended a party at the Nell home in honor of the three girls. Birthday wishes are extended to Barbara Oeffling who joined the ranks of teenagers on reaching her thirteenth birthday, March 2. The momentous occasion was celebrated by a family party including Mr. and Mrs. George CCULLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVESQUB 885-8191 FATHER, SONS ROUTED BY FIRE AT HAINES H0ME The serenity of a peaceful Sunday was interrupted in the village when a fire at the George Haines home, 5003 W. Fountain Lane, routed Charles Kingston and his two sons, Bradley and Ronny. The three were in one of the bedrooms constructing model cars, when they smelled smoke. Opening the door, they were horrified to find the kitchen in flames. They ran out and across the street to the home of Ethel and Bill Schmidt. M a r i e Koch. Petie Oakford attended a bridal shower in Chicago for Dawn Likosar who wyi ll be married to Dennis Anderson on April 2. The groom-to-be was a junior usher in the Oakford wedding. On Wednesday evening the Oakfords joined the rest of Petie's family for a stage play in the loop. The play lived up to all the advance publicity and was a thrilling experience. Before curtain time, they had dinner, in a posh Michigan Avenue restaurant, which really set the tone of the whole evening. Loesch. Traffic on Fountain Lane was closed to all but emergencies. The fire department put out the flmaes in record time, but it will be some time before the Haines will be able to live there. About $4,000 worth of damage was estimated by Chief Justen. At the time of the fire, Evie and George were in Wonder Lake taking care of the service station which they operate. Worthy Recognition For ' Wonderful Neighbors Thrilled beyond words were Genevieve and Hugh McDonald last Wednesday, March 2, when they were presented with a citat'on from the American Legibn. It reads "The American Legion Certificate of Participation is awarded to Hugh and Genevieve McDonald in appreciation of and recognition for active participation in community service and American Legion programs. Presented the second of March 1966 by American Legion post 491. Signed: Glen Messer, adjutant and Albert C. Bianchi, commander." The sign hangs in a very prominent place on one of the walls. Jean and Hughie have taken a very active role in community projects and have been wonderful neighbors for almost 27 years, and they are certainly deserving of this honor. The presentation was made by Commander Bianchi and Glen. A Lucky Hunch It was a mighty surprised and pleased gal that opened the letter from her mother to find that the family name came in for some money. It seems that Barbara Thacker received a missive from her mom and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. James Benesh, relating that a horse named Thacker came in first in a race at Little Rock, Ark. and paid off 4 to 1. Mr. and Mrs. Benesh have been vacationing in Little Rock and were taken to the Oak Lawn Jockey Club by a friend who is a detective at the track. Mrs. Benesh who had never seen a horse race before or placed a bet in her life, played a hunch on "Thacker" who was listed first. The horse began gaining and passing the others and when it was in third place, the excitement got to Lucille and she began cheering for her choice. Just imagine her thrill at the outcome! To add to the excitement, it was a photo finish. Ladies Meet Tonight Members of the Ladies of the Lake will meet' tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. All women of the community are cordially invited to attend; Following the business meeting, there will be a social with refreshments. Hospital Patients Leo Sales became quite ill last weekend and was taken to Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. He is undergoing a series of tests and X-rays to determine the source of his illness. He is also scheduled for surgery in the near future so he will probably be hospitalized for several weeks. A cheery greeting from you will certainly improve his morale. A bout of pneumonia put Bruce Thacker in McHenry hospital last Friday. As of Monday, his condition was considerably improved and he was probably released the early part of the week. He will not be able to return to his studies at McHenry junior high where he is a seventh grade student for some time. Sorry to report that Elsie Nelson is still hospitalized in McHenry. She and husband, Clayt, were scheduled for a vacation trip to Florida and Nassau with their son and family, Dr. and Mrs. Don Nelson. Isn't that a low blow? Time is Running Out!
