The campaign for funds is now under way in McHenry county. A protest against the use of federal funds toward the production of a motion picture on t h e p l e a s u r e s o f s m o k i n g American cigarettes has been forwarded to Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman by the National Tuberculosis association. The action' was occasioned by the fact that the Agriculture department gave financial assistance to the production of a film, "The World of Pleasure," in which the use and sale of American cierarettes abroad is promoted. The protest was ?lso directed against the participation of the department in a series of television commercials with a similar message to be shown in Japan, Thailand and Austria. In a letter to Secretary Freeman transmitting the resolution Dr. James E. Perkins, managing director of the NTA, called attention to the fact that another branch of the Federal government, the Public Health Service, was "spending tim6, effort, and tax funds to discourage Americans from smoking because of the deleterious effects on health." "It is inconsistent, to say the least, "said Dr. Perkins, "to have one department of the federal government, the Public Health service, spending time, effort and tax funds to discourage Americans from smoking because of the deleterious effects on health, while another federal department s p e n ds time, effort and tax funds to support propaganda to encourage this disease-causing habit in foreign countries." "Give the green light to the crippled and keep them moving." This is the slogan for the 1966 campaign for funds for the benefit of the Easter Seal Society for the McHenry county chapter of the Illinois Association for the Crippled, Inc. Chester Gould of Woodstock, nationally known creator of the "Dick Tracy comic strip and the 1966 campaign chairman, originated the slogan in an effort to put in motion an intensive drive for funds for Easter Seal. ,1, TWa year the goal as announced by Gould is $15,000, an estimated $2,000 over the ' m contributions; This is necessary he said, because of the .incr^pied demands at the therapy center operated by the organization.
