Among those resolutions should be some which can help the motorists improve their driving habits during the forthcoming year. x The motorist who Just "glides" through Stop signs { ' Cars of three Jewel Tea Co. employees were badly damaged early Monday morning when a company truck rolled down the hill from the store parrying lot.on Elm street. Tpie cars belong to Jean W. Christensen of Cary, Timothy J. Jacks o? Round Lake and lieo Funk of Wauconda. { -Truck Driver Charles McFarland of Chicago told city police he drove onto the upper level at 8:15 a.m., parked it, left the motor running and set the brake before going iito the store. The hand brake was still holding following the impact, but it is believed the 30-ton weight of the truck was re sponsible for ttie failure to hold. de Leaders i-ii-lbft .tfl'liiKii"'* V V -r' "iti ' iSi" J kl" FIGHT CANCER Volunteers put the action in the American Cancer society's. 1965 Cancer Crufsade How under way throughout McHenry county. Not only should he plan on completely obeying all stop signs, but he will heed all signs which are placed along the streets and highways. The thoughtless driver who in the past has been willing to "take a chance" when passing another vehicle, should plan to make an earnest endeavor in the future to be more than" positive he has sufficient room before he attempts to overtake and pass another vehicle. The careless motorist whose laxity about signaling when stopping or turning, will try to make 1966 a safer highway year for himself and others by always signaling on these occasions. A copy of the completely new "Rules of the Road" booklet will be sent to you free upon request. ^Vrite to Paul Powell, Secretary of State, Springfield, Illinois. HURT IN CRASH Jenny Schneider of Holiday Hills was hospitalized in McHenry last Friday evening following an accident on River road, two miles south of the city. Research success in many pl$a££S of the battle against cancer is powerful incentive feci* the tireless workers in Mc- Hehry county's "Tell your Neighbor" Cancer Crusade." The army of more than 900 citizens are calling on their neighbors to issue personal pleas that people in the county look for the seven danger signals of cancer--and to act at once if any are spotted. Because of the-great role research plays in this determination to whip cancer, thr local participants in this nation-wide Cancer Crusade are eager 1o seek money- during their doorto- door, office-to-office visit. Arnold May of Richmond, w h o i s s p e a r h e a d i n g t h i s sizable drive for the second year, has established a goal of $20,000. "We want to raise $20,001 and hope our workers call on the homes of all 95,000 citizens in McHenry county," he said. May added that if anyone is overlooked, he v can send his contribution to him, with the check payable to the Cancer Crusade, Richmond, 111. During. 1965, ' the American Cancer Society focused its research efforts on six specific cancer sites as major targets. There are more than 100 forms of cancer which afflici mankind. Of this number, hix account for some 60 per cent of all cancer cases observed and more than 48 per cent of all cancer deaths, May ex? plained. How can I remove surface discolorations from my bathtub? A. Use a mixture of baking powder and peroxide, making a paste of these two ingredients and applying it to the discolored areas. After this has dried, wash it away, and the original luster should be restored. Incidentally, this treatment is also very good for brightening up the finish on your refrigerator. Q. When applying new enamel paint over an already enameled surface, how can I prevent it from running? A. Try adding a little cornstarch to your enamel. Q. How can I make a quicker job of defrosting frozen foods? A. Try standing them in front of an electric fan. Q. How can I prevent candlewax from dripping onto my tablecloth? • A. Wrap the butt-ends of your candles with 5-inch squares of aluminum foil before inserting them into their holder8. Shave the candles, if necessary, for a good fit. The foil,, in addition to catching any possible drippings, also provides a decorative touch. Q. How can I prevent washable garments from creasing so easily later? A. Be sure not .to dampen the clothes so much that it is difficult to iron them absolutely dry. If clothes are not ironed absoluely , dry, they tend to crease and wrinkle easily after just one wearing. Q. How can I clean varnished wallpaper? A. Melt a bar of yellow soap into a pan of warm water, and apply this with a soft brush, being sure, not to haye your brush too wet. Q. What is a g6od compound to use for stripping old wallpaper off the walls? A. Brush on the paper a solution of paste consisting of one cup of flour to every three gallons of water. This paste prevents the moisture from evaporating too quickly, so that you'll have more time for peeling and scraping off the old paper. Q. What can I do about light scorch stains on linens? A. Sometimes the rubbing of a cut onion over these stains will solve this little problem. Follow this by soaking the linen In cold water, and then laundering. Q. How can I remove the mirror-like shine from the back of a serge suit? A. Try rubbing with hot vinegar, then sponging with ammonia. Q. How can I prevent nylon cord or twine from fraying at a cut end? A. By heating the end over a small flame. Nylon will melt and the strands will bind into a solid unit. .Knots can be kept from working loose by this Same treatment. Q. How can I add a crisp shin^ to my straw hats? A. Try uding some hair spray, the care of all hats is dealt with in my new household-hints book. TREES AND NITROGEN Spreading nitrogen on the ground will result in as much tree growth as placing it in holes or using a liquid, variety. That's the advice of Illinois Natural History Survey plant pathologists E. B. Himelick and Dan Neely. During the last three years, Dr. Neely and Himelick have experimented on trees growing in Andres silt loam soil in the Morton Arboretum near Chicago. They found that spreading the equivalent of six pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet produced better tree-diameter growth than the growth in Unfertilized trees. Applying a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium beneath the soil surface in either dry or liquid form produced no greater growth than spreading nitrogen alone on the surface. Spraying feitilizers on leaves did not noticeably increse tree growth. Onfe of the biggest problems .^earing- children is to know where and when to give a*big hand.
