T) By: Earl Walah Aiiy resemblance to our column as turned in last week and as it appeared escapes our eagle eye. ^ We never forget a word about Mother's Day, but 'twas So&t along the way. And, a note to Bill Malpede. We did report Ben Thelen's hole-in-oiie which was shot on the 145-yard fourth hole at Pistakee Country Club. We noted that you were almost as ithrUted as Ben. Aside from those items and a goof-up of lines in the report •on Paul Morenz everything was just dandy. That was a week that left us weak. So this is the day .we had our say. ATTEN-SHUN! Boys who want to play American Legion baseball are urged to meet at 3 p.m., Saturday, Mayr 21st, in the American Legion Home. If you were born Jbefore Sept. 1st. 1947, you are not eligible for this league. The CoQnty League is waiting for you.- • - . Leonard Bottari is going to manage the team this year and Is enthusiastic about making this- a successful and enjoyable season for the players. Be there to sign your card. After the Dodgers won the wforld series last, year, the experts told us the game had changed. Defense was to be the story of baseball. Somehow, 1JTJseeftxs the teams with fence blisters are the ones who are picking up the marbles so far this season. The defense looks Eighty helpless watching a ball sail over the fence. ..Let us remind you that Gene Efrooke is handling the sports liage. If you do not get a chance to talk to Gene, please leave your reports in the Plaindealer • office for him. At night yqu can slip your story in the slot in front of the Plaindealer bliildirtg. Now we know this old world of ours is mixed up. When you arise on a morning near the middle of May and see the ground covered wjth snow, it is time to believe that the pattern is cockeyed. "BIG MAH" FOR CULVER STOCKTON'S BASEBALL TEAM a '.i CANTON, Mo.--Faced with the prospect of hitting below .300 for the first time in college, Culver-Stockton senior Harry May has gone on a hitting rampage. The left-handed hitting second baseman collected four hits in six official trips to the plate as Culver-Stockton swept a doubleheader from Drt^ry College Saturday (April 30). May reached base seven times in eight trips to the plate and scored six runs. Among his hits were a home run and two doubles. He drove in three runs and stole three bases. The output raised his average to .282 and put. the ..3QQ. mark within reach. As a freshman, May hit >365. He raised it to .428 his sophomore year and pounded the opponents for a .465 mark last spring. At McHenry (111.) High School, May hit at least .300 for Coach L. J. McCracken every season but one. He slipped to a .298 mark his senior year. "He's the - best hustler I have on the team," says Culver- Stockton Coach Chuck Solberg. "He has a tremendous knowledge of the game and is a real team leader. "He's just starting to hit like he should, 'but even in his hitting slump he got good wood on' the ball. He Struck out only four times in the first 13 games." May. went hitless in three of the first four games and had a 1-fOr-ll start before braking the ^shiliip." . • May's" siie, at 5-foot-6 and 162 "poupds, may be his only limitation as ' a professional prospect. . A good baserunner, he covers plenty of ground around second and has made 0nly';Qh0' error--that in the first game. He has helped the Wildcats turn out 11 double plays. An excellent lead-off hitter, May walked 10 times, stole seven bases and scored 13 runs in the first 13 games. But he can • hit with power, too, despite his size. He led the Wildcats in extra base hits last season and shared the early lead this spring. "May has the respect of the entire team," Solberg says, "and they follow his example. He may look small to some of the teams we play, but they soon realize their mistake. He's Culver - Stockton's big man." L0S1 TO MARIAN CENTRAL 1-0 The baseball team split a double header with North Chicago Saturday. The first game was lost by the Warriors 2-1, again demonstrating a lack of offensive punch. Dave F. Smith w;as again the victim of poor hitting. Dave allowed nine scattered hits, walked one, hit one batter, and fanned three. The second game must have been a great relief to the Warriors as they put across seven runs, winning 7-2. The brightest aspect of all however, was sophomore pitcher Creighton. Creighton was brought up to the varsity specifically for the double header and came through with a victory. He allowed only four hits. The sophomore hurler fanned seven in chalking up the victory. Each is an excellent player, Kuechel a shortstop, Sard a third baseman. Weather Forces Cancellation At Waukegan Races Waukegan, HI., May 8th. -- Unseasonable cold and very windy weather forced the cancellation of the Sunday night, May 8th., modified and late model stock car races scheduled for the Waukegan Speedway. A full card of modified and late model stock car racing is scheduled for this coming Sunday night, May 15th. After cool and showery weather greeted the crowd for the thrilling Saturday night races, a turn to even cooler and more unpleasant weather surrounded the possibilities of racing Sunday night. This setback makes it three out of five programs that the weatherman has 'won' at Waukegan Speedway this spring.
