But, it always^ seemed l i k e s u m m e r v a c a t i o n w a s g o i n g d o w n h i l l a f t e r t h e Fourth. Of course, we had the county fair to look forward to with great anticipation. Mothers used to fry quite a basket full of chicken for the picnic lunch. When the family separated at the fair grounds, mothers headed f o r t h e f a n c y w o r k a n d home canning department while father looked over the livestock, horse races and baseball games. The kids covered a lot of ground and never missed the refreshment stands as long as the small change lasted. How well we remember a Fourth of July carnival and ball game at the Wattles Driving Park (now Wattles Subdivision) when we., had a whole quarter to spend and squeezed it the longest time before breaking it for a nickel ride on the merry-go-round. The days of real sport! It was a pleasure to watch the many people enjoying boat rides on Fox River over the h o t W e e k e n d . M o s t o f t h e drivers we saw were out for safe and sane pleasure. The patrol boat was out to watch the cowboy drivers. McHenry ha* much to offer in recreation. Saw the beautiful new YMCA building in Niles last week and watched the children taking swimming lessons. A stranger asked what we had as a boy In the way of a pool: We told him most of our early summers were spent on a farm and we went down to the creek at night to wash off the barley beards. "Was it sanitary?", he asked. We told him it must have been 'cause the horses and cows drank out of that same creek. He looked at Us like we were some kind of a nut For a long time we have dreamed of having the ability to write or compile material for a book when we reach the (age that they turn us out to pasture. Just decided that one portion will be headed "The Women In Our Life." We grew up with a mother and three sisters. No brothers. A wife and daughter can also add a few pages. Working with three or four girls in an office can also give a fellow material. Of c o u r s e , we h a v e g o n e through some years with gals in the Plaindealcr office. Not that there hasn't been a lot of association with men. It is just that men understand men. Now, you take worhen!
