The chorale has been in rehearsal since last May for this particular production in order to achieve the highest musical performance possible. Director Monkman has also added four superb voices to sing the soprano, alto, tenor and bass solos. "The Messiah" is a theatrical celebration of a religious event and is actually divided musically and theologically into 3 parts. It deals with the birth of Christ, tells of Christ's rejection and suffering, the joyful meaning of Christ's reign, and lastly His crucifixion and resurrection. The Fine Arts chorale's presentation of this masterpiece is certainly a fitting beginning to Woods toe k's "Christmas on the Square".' On Dec. 18 this same chorale is presenting the warm and simply told opera, "One Christmas Long Ago". During the 1500's, the Scottish people cut and burned off all of the forest cover in many areas, to clean out tht wolves, who were about to take over. Then, erosion washed away the soil, and the people had to move out, too. Porcupines in Michi g a n have a "pointed" taste preference for eating certain plywood signs. Newspaper Best Mtedieam For Advertiser To Convey Story A chemical company has announced the development of a new synthetic product which may revolutionize one of the major consumer product industries. Greatest fear of the company concerning the new material is one which always haunts the builder of a sensationally better mousetrap. The public is always skeptical of superlative claims. This is especially true when the new product is offered at lower prices than the product which it threatens to replace. The chemical company is attempting to solve the problem of public skepticism by introducing its new material in finished products which will sell above average price. The company feels that the high cost will create inference of quality. The theory is probably accurate. Most adults can remember when the public considered nylon a cheap substitute for silk, or when detergents were regarded as imitation soap. It would be difficult to sell the finest perfume in the world in a fifty cents container if it were competing with the second best in a five dollar container. The problem of giving the public something better for much less calls for re-education through advertising in a trusted medium. It calls for convincing and thorough explanation and illustration. It calls for advertising which may be studied and reviewed. A sophisticated public demands to know why a sensational offer can be made. Unlimited space for complete information, proven public faith, and the quality of newsiness, make the local newspaper first choice of the advertiser who needs to convince the consumer that something is better and cheaper. Waukegan Rd. PHONE 385-1180 & Awwg Co. McHenry, 111 From Mrs. C. William Hunsberger, Souderton, Pa.: The approaching Fall already evidenced by the dogwoods leaves turning blackish red and its berries reminds me of the day of my y o u t h when t h e s t a n d a r d Sunday a f t e r n o o n f a r e was a hike through the countryside. In our small town it was the custom in the Fall, especially, for the young people (plus any oldsters, too) to go hiking in the country for 10 or 15 miles. This was a spontaneous group and little pre-arrangement was necessary. If the weather was good you just knew the hiking was on. Sometimes as many as 20 or 30 of us made the hike. Even though we were born and raised m" the country there was always a new and exciting place to be discovered. We hiked to places like Devil's Potato Patch, a field of rocks probably placed there by a glacier, where we scrambled over the rocks. We went to Lovers Leap, where an Indian Brave and his girl were supposed to have jumped to their death bec a u s e t h e y c o u l d not m a r r y . There were the places like the gold mines (now water filled) where gold was supposed to have been discovered. We rooted through the remains pf an old powder mill and explored the caves of Turkey Buzzard. When the Fall arrives with its brilliantly colored leaves 1 always remember with fondness . and thankfulness these hikes to beauty and adventure.
