Basketball Picks And Player Preview For '66 In North Suburban Loop By Bert Hageniatui Having been associated with basketball in this confer* ince for six years, I would like to use this week's column to make some predictions for the North Suburban conference for this coming season. Here is the way I see the final standings come tho end of next February. 1. North Chicago 2.' Libertyville Woodstock 4. McHenry 5. Zion Benton 6. Barrington 7. Dundee 8. Crystal Lake North Chicago, wihner of last year's conference title, is once again loaded. They graduated only one starting senior, and have returning lettermen Rufus Woods leading a squad which plays tremendous defense and is capable of unloading a blistering offense. Anyone who beats this ball club can consider having done a job well, as they possess speed, size, and great shooting. Libertyville will also welcome back a number of returning lettermen, having lost only two starters from last years second place ball club. The only problem the speedy Cats will face is lack of height, but their ball hawking ability and fine outside shooting should carry them to a hig hconference finish. Streaks Big Up Front At Woodstock, Coach Gib Kurt/ will welcome back perhaps the biggest front line in the conference, with the Johnson boys and Wilson giving h i m h e i g h t , w e i g h t , a n d strength under the bucket. His only problem might arise from inexperience in the back court, but look for this well coached team to finish ^high in the standings. McHenry this year welcomes back 6 lettermen, headed by Tom Evans, Phil Schimke, Pat Camasta, Paul Kilday, Clarence Sossong, and Kit Carstens. Other squad members who have survived the squad cut , are juniors Frank C u d a, Keith Mereness, Dave Webe r , H a r o l d W e b e r , B o b M a u c h , D a v e F l e t c h e r , B i l l Kuechel, Chuck Reilly, Phil Krause, and Senior Rich Harrison. The Warriors will present a new offense, along with a pressing defense. With a predominately senior ball club, McHenry should be most respectful this year, and with a few breaks, -could climb up the standings.^Certainly there is no one who would rather see them climb to the top than myself, but the road will be long and rugged. With a few breaks, this ball club could develop into quite a basketball, team. Only time will tell. Under a Blanket As far as this writer is concerned, the next three teams c a n b e p u t u n d e r a blanket and take your choice. Zion has a huge front line but could have trouble handling a press. Barrington should have a nicely balanced club with a junior named Showers providing some fireworks. Dundee will probably start 3 or four juniors, and lack of experience wilt hurt -early in the season. Ho\v-| ever, by late in the year, this could be a ball club to reckon with. In rounding out the conference standings, it looks like a dismal eighth for the Tigers this year. They have huge Arnie Dubenson and Glen Guss, but lack of experience will find Crystal Lake mired near the bottom. Right or wrong, that's how I see them this year. Basketball is a game of surprises, and this year certainly will have its share of them. The Warriors open their season thrs weekend with Grant and Antioch on successive nights. Let's get out and see what Coach Glen An^cson has in store for McHenry fans this year.
