V ^GE^^SECTION 1 - MCHENRY PLAINDEALER - NOVEMBER 17, 1966 THE GOIDEN YEARS RETIREMENT IS WHAT YOU DO, NOT WHERE YOU GO TO DO IT You can move once after you retire -- from a snowbank to Vunshine or from a sick city to a town -- and things may work out fine. But move twice, as a growing Jnumber. of retired people are doing, and you'd better have a talk with yourself. A fellow named Bagley, and his wife, packed up and took off this week . . . for a town about 200 miles away. They told friends and neighbors they had friends there, along with some special interests, and if it weren't for these they would never dream of swapping this lovely place for that one. But they told eath other that the garbage service was bad, the people were provincial, the taxes were high, the church was indifferent, and the town was unfriendly. Neither of these stories was true They were moving because they had not been accepted here in a manner they thought fitting, had not been patronized, and after nearly two years knew only & few people and had only a few places to go. Hie new town would be better, or so they thought. And this was the tragedy that rode along in the van with their furniture. The new town wouldn't be better]1 Because this was theifStecond move. And they would surely repeat there the miscalculation they had made here. A clergyman who knew the Bagleys sized them up: "They were like so many retired people I see moving into town now after they get their pensions. They are groping. But if they are fairly well off they are proud of their past lives, and are carrying their ego on their backs. They want, and expject, attention. / "Mr. Bagley was offered an ushering job at the church\ He thought he should be on the governing board. Mrs. Bagley also was invited to work. She too found the status of the work too low. In other a c t i v i t i e s around town they took the safme attitudes. Not arrogant, you understand. Just not interested in community roles less.elevated than they had during Mr. Bagley's career. "So they failed to make a f o u n d a t i o n from which they could make new friends here. And in the meantime, it seems, they sat at home waiting for people to call on them first. Well, people don't do that anymore. New people in a town, and especially retired new people, have to forget the old Emily Post rules and go out and scratch to nrrake a place for t h e m s e l v e s . . . " Too many retired people nowadays are placing too high a value on their past careers, their titles, their past accomplishments, or their money. Nobody is very interested in them. Only in who and what they are now. For *<• GOLDEN YEARS 36-po«« bootl«*.F •ei*d 50c in coin (no tftompt), to Dept. CSPS, Bob 1672, Grand Control Station, Now York, N. Y. 10017. ISSUE REPORT ON DRIVERS LICENSE IN THIRTY STATES^ A report was released recently on drivers licenses by the Office of Planning of the Bureau of Public Roads, U.S. Department of Commerce. Thirty states were able to supply counts of drivers' licenses outstanding at the end of 1965, segregated by age groups and by sex, and these, the report said, are undoubtedly indicative of the figures of other states that are not available. The driver's license fee in Illinois is $3.00 for a threeyear period, and two-thirds of such receipts go to the Drivp ers' Education fund and oneto tfite road fund, was foUpd that the ratios lale-to-female drivers increase substantially and progressively in the age groups 55 and above. This is particularly significant when it 4s remembered that the life expectancy of women is now 73V27 6 years longer than that of men in- this country. In the age groups in which the ratio of males to females is decreasing, the ratio of maleto- female licensed drivers increases substantially and progressively, undoubtedly indicating a more rapid tapering off of driving by women in the upper age groups. However, this may change as more women familiar wit!) driving progress into older age groups. Respiratory diseases take a toll in America that would not have been believable a few years ago. Some of the basic reasons are said to be air pollution and increased cigarette smoking. Tuberculosis Associations use Christmas Seal Campaign funds in the fight against R.D. (respiratory disease).
