Twas nice to hear „ from Don Brockrogge, engineer in Ihe State Highway office, that he is a loyal reader of S.I.H. The same goes for "Sonijy" Smith, now a Wisconsinite, \ who once played a lot of third base for Johnsburg baseball teams. It is nice to hear. k Met Ihe Frank Lows on the eve of Thanksgiving. Do you suppose the other teams are sipping tea with sugar lumps during intermission while our boys arc drinking plain old water? Another thought is that somebody turns off the heat in our lx>ys' lecture room during the half time. Something cools em off. See the report on the Guili- Ii.tO jame and you will see whore a pitiful third quarter gave the visitors the game. Lot's come out snortin' for the third quarter at Crystal Lake, fellows, and make our I'hservation look _bad. In a good spread of scoring in the Johnsburg lineup, the local entry in the Northern I l l i n o i s b a s k e t b a l l l e a g u e swamped Hampshire 124-74 in a pre-turkey game Wednesday evening on the < winner's floor. Don Bentz dropped in 13 baskets to lead the home team in a game decided by floor shots, not from the free throw line. There were only 9 fouls called on Johnsburg and 10 on Hampshire, an oddity in the game of basketball as played today. The Warriors carried a 40-25 lead into the dressing room at half time, and it looked like Coach Glen Anderson had finally found the answers and combinations he had been seeking. The orange and blapk rebounded well, shot respectably, and played a tenacious defense. The final score was Guilford 64, McHenry 62. However, the Warriors came out the second half looking like Eskimos. While McHenry was stone cold from the field, Rockford Guilford was scoring 18 points in a row to our none. For the. remainder of the game, the lead see-sawed back and forth, and with only a few seconds remaining in the ball game, McHenry fans had thoughts of an overtime. The tall, rangy Rockford quintet brought the ball down the floor with the score tied and precious seconds remaining on the clock. A foul was detected on the Warriors, and the offended player calmly sank two free throws to give the narrow decision to the Guilford squad. Now to Tame Tigers I n c o n s i s t e n c y w a s t h e watchword for the Warriors. At times this five looked brilliant, and at other times they were erratic, throwing passes astray, committing violations, and missing some good shots. Better defense and more consistent shooting will have to be the rule of the day as McHenry opens its conference schedule this Friday night against the Tigers of Crystal Lake. The neighboring school to the south features huge Artie Dickenson, sharp shooting Glen Guss, and rangy Terry Herrick. Crystal Lake features a new coach and of- .fense, let's see how t%y will slack up against a Warrior team which is due to exjJlocle into a fine effort. GAA, FATHERS ENJOY DADDY DATE NIGHT The McHenry wrestl i n g team started off the season not with a bang, but with a violent explosion as they downed a hapless team from Lake Zurich, 43-10. To start the match off, Dennis Sundby won his match with a pin, and he was followed by Terry Morrison, wrestling this year at 103. Morrison pinned his man and then the Warriors suffered one of their few reverses all night as Nich Martinez was decisioned, 7-2 by his opponent. Sam Lamont, at 130 pinned his man, and John Hennenberg decisioned his, 5-0. In the next match at 133, Don Voight ended up with a draw, and Larry Young was pinned in the 138 pound class. The grapplers then followed with three straight pins by Tony Wagner, 145; Will Stahl, 154; and Mike Antonocelli 165. Jim Laursen won his match at 180 by a 10-5 score, and heavyweight Tom Daugherty finished off the evening with a pin. McHenry will face Crystal Lake on the home mats this Friday night, so Warrior wrestling fans can get their first home town view of what shows promise of being a fine wrestling team.
