PAGE 4, SECTION 1 - MCHENRY PLAINPEALER - DECEMBER 8, 1966 Use Of Computers Improve Medical Care Standards The use of computers to improve medical care standards and analyze patient records has become a reality at Mc- Henry hospital. Three staff members were in Ann Arbor, Mich., last month to learn more about Professional Activities Study and the Medical Audit Program. The two professional services are offered by the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities and used by 994 hospitals throuj^hout the country. McHenry Hospital joined the growing number of participating hospitals last March, Anthony Corcoran, administrator, said this week. Corcoran, Mrs. Margery Gunter, medical librarian, and Dr. E. I. Berman, chief of staff, attended the two-day conference at Ann Arbor. Every month McHenry hospital sends, a summary of medical records on every patient duscharged during that month to the Commission on Profei soalpAns Haoc- isndlat tivities for analysis and breakin mu Christmas is a time for Old &rtends, Qood food & cDrinh, Laughter?,, Small Children, m f^ircpiaem and Welcome Gifts by VAN HEUSEM A superior selection of Van Heusen shirts and sportswear awaits you We're sure you'll find something special for every man on your list. Come in and shop or browse ... or just to chat. We'll be glad to see you iifWm down with information from other participating hospitals. This data is compiled and a summary is sent Corcoran and other staff members at once, thanks to the wizardry of this computer age. The medical staff uses the data in many ways. The material serves as a measuring tool for certain types of cases against the same cases in other hospitals . "Our treatment procedures can be compared with others according to the finest recognized standards," said Corcoran. The medical staff and board of directors can evaluate the medical care provided and strive for improvements as determined through computer analysis. This computer program provides a method to evaluate patient care in all branches, of medicine: Internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics and surgery. Corcoran said special data can be obtained on request by the hospital pinpointing specific types of cases. Installation of the P.A.S. system simplifies medical record indexing. Hand operations are streamlined, and a net saving to the hosital should result, he observed. "The conference gave us an insight into how information can be used and how we can use the computer for some localized studies we would like to make," advised Corcoran. The Commission on Professional and Hospital Actvities was established in 1955 by the American College of Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Hospital western Michigan Hospital association* Read The Classifieds COLLECT $11*816 IN CHRISTMAS SEAL PROGRAM Two weeks after the opening of the Christmas Seal campaign on Nov. 15, the amount contributed has- reached 511,816. "This is about $2,000 less than had been received last year at this time," said Mrs. Claribel H. Naylor, R.N., of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association. "However, since the Christmas Seal letters were mailed about a week later than last year, we believe that we will have a substantial increase over the $24,769.00 received in 1965," said Mrs. Naylor. The Christmas Seal campaign provides the only funds for the program of the Tuberculosis association. The campaign total deterrftines the year's Christmas Seal program. In 1966 the mobile chest xray unit made eleven visits to the county, one each to Crystal Lake, Marengo, Cary, McHenry and Harvard, and six to Woodstock. A total of 6,600 x-rays were taken. In addition, about 6,000 tuberculin skin tests were administered. in the public and parochial schools; also hundreds of pieces of health education mafprial were distributed. Every citizen is urged to a n s w e r t h e C h r i s t m a s S e a l letter with as large a contribution as they can, thus joining in the fight to eradicate tuberculosis and find other respiratory diseases so that our children may grow up in a community free from tuberculosis. Anyone who did not receive the Christmas Seals may call the office of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association and the seals will be mailed promptly.
