SCHOOL TAX REFERENDUM "Dear Editor: "This Saturday, voters in the McHenry elemen ta ry school district will be asked to go to the polls and vote on a referendum seeking an increase in real estate taxes. "The increase would permit tax?s to be raised by a few cents each year, as enrollments increase, to a total of 33 cents per $100 of assessed real estate valuation. This total is broken down into 21 cents for the education fund, 7 cents for transportation,, and 5 cents for building maintenance. "The School board is asking the owner of an average $15,- 000 house to approve an increase in his taxes for a total of $33. This total amount would be levied at $5 or $6 per year for a period of five or six years. "Due to the present inflationary period and a rapidly increasing school population, costs in operating a first-rate school system are steadily rising. "The tax increase would permit the employment of more topnotch teachers in local schools. More teachers would result in smaller classes, thus permitting each teacher to devote more classroom time per student. "Without a tax increase, DECEMBER 8. 1966 - MCHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 5. SECTION 1 special education for children who need it and the adult education program would have to be sacrificed. Broad student educational programs, such as experimental classes in economics and foreign languages, would have to be continued on a limited basis. "School Superintendent Carl Bergstrom points out that the transportation fund is already depleted. This is the fund that provides for free students bus transportation to and from school. "Bergstrom also points out that the building maintenance fund is heading toward a large deficit. "We are in the midst of the Christmas season, the time for giving. Let us continue to give our children a first-rate school system by voting in favor of the referendu. "Very truly yours. "W. R.
