T PAGE 4, SECTION 1 - MCHENRY PLAINDEALER - DECEMBER 15, 1966 - BENEFIT SHOOT AT WING 'N FIN TO AID COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM SO I HEAR . Wins Bowling Tounraomet By: Ear! Wikk This is the way we heard The story. If any persons nami d should wish to correct it, they can write us a note for publication next week and may also enclose a picture which we will print. The story is that several country girls went to the bi£ city recently and got lost on the way home. r"" Mrs. Arnie Michels, Carrie Justen, Lillian Stilling and her little sister, Rosalie Barnickol, were returning from Chicago on the evening train. Now the girls must have been visiting when they hit McHenry 'cause they stayed >n the choo-choo and headed for Rincnvood. The lights of Ringwood startled the girls and a frantic notice to hte conductor brought 'er to a halt about a block past the depot. Neither mud nor slush nor lack of a compass could stop our trail blazers as they found their way to the telephone booth in front of Pearson's Garage. The way we heard it, Pete Justen toured up north and brought the girls home safely. Bet those gals will have tag? on them the next time so the conductor can let them off at thr right station. Reminds us of the time two girls of our acquaintance rushed madly, with packages in arms, to get off at Barrington thinking they were in Crystal Lake. And, of course, we have a storv of two gals who got lost in Tefasa Cotta. But, we won't ^o in to that one now. Our Warrior varsity basketaball team looked real sharp in the first half against Dundee, setting up plays, passing accurately and getting the best out of Pat Camasta that we have seen. The Warriors were out in front 31-25 at half time, lost the 6-point lead plus 6 more in the third quarter and couldn't buy a basket in the fourth period. We have talked with former McHS players, old grads and several loyal fans since that game and heard different versions of why we lost this game and other games. Opinions do differ. Too many to relate right now. Some got around to our records in other sports and are unhappy fellows. Everybody loves a winner. We have always had the old fashioned idea that the best defense is a good offense, but Dundee's defense in the last half made our boys shoot from bad spots then grabbed the rebounds. In fact, we are told that Dundee grabbed 44 rebounds to our 29. Another thine;, Dundee gained 18 points contact CHAIN-O-LA&ES JRAVEL SERVICE 34(V> W. Another real McHenryite has been called to his reward this week -- Fred Nickels. Fred moved to Barrington some years ago, but visited us often. We covered lots of ground in going over McHenry's history and his visits were always too short. Nobody could remember peopl ^ places and events better than Fred. It may sound strange, but we had a real enjoyable visit with Dorothy Nickels and her family at the wake. We are sure Fred would want it that way. The first peoople we met were the Landgrens and could have spent much more time with them without running low on subjects to discuss. SPORTS M THIRD QUARTER ILAP5E S6AIN HITS WARRIORS MR FIRST HALF LEAD OVER CARDINALS By Bert Hagemann The third quarter hex struck :igain Friday night as the Warriors dropped a hard fought, frustrating battle to the Cardunals of Dundee by a 60-48 margin. Once again it was a case of first half superiority on the part of the orange and black, and then a (utile second half of mistakes, bad shots, and field goal frigidity. As the McHenry roundballers trotted off the floor at half time, they held a 31-25 lead and Warrior fans were hopeful that McHenry had finally come of age in this young season. The Warriors had coupled a tenacious man to man defense with superb shooting to stun a confident Cardunal quintet into numerous mechanical lapses. But the handwriting was on the wall as the second half opened, as the Warriors were forced to go into a zone because center Phil Schimke was once again reclining on the bench with four fouls. The Cardunals put on a shooting exhibition, led by center Doug Etzel to outscore McHenry 19 to 7 in the third stanza. As the fourth quarter opened, McHenry once again found themselves trying to play catch up. ° Cold Shooting However, cold shooting and continued foul troubles spelled defeat for the scrappy Warriors once again, and they went down to their fifth defeat of the season against no victories. Certainly McHenry could not be blamed for lack of desire or hustle. However, they could be blamed for taking shots which were not the best, and committing fouls which at times seemed quite foolish. Now McHenry has played two of the poorer teams in the conference, and must next week venture into the Warhawk nest at North Chicago. The Warhawks, led by Rufus Woods and assorted others, have blasted off the launch pad this year and manhandled all opponents so far. Coach Anderson hints the Warriors will possibly unveil a few surprises on Friday night in hopes of throwing North Chicago off stride and putting the Warriors finally into the victory column. In other round ball action over the weekend, the sophomore pulled off a narrow victory in the closing seconds, and the freshmen team manhandled Dundee, 76-58, to run their record to 4-0.
