The leveling has been done, and lining plus the filling for the big freeze is scheduled to be don§ on Thursday. That will provide skating enjoyment for our youngsters with safety. No fear of falling into deep waters if you take your children youngsters to enjoy themselves, and not to abuse the use of the skatng area. Lighting is being looked into, so our skaters may extend their day. Hot Lunch Servers To start the new year with serving for hot lunches are Helen Barker and Phyllis O'- Halleran serving hot dogs on Jan. 11. And serving barbecues on Jan. 18 is Phyllis O'Halleran and Rose Petska. Blr&Mayo . A happy birthday to Pat Klapperich on Jan. 11 and to Rose Petska who celebrates her natal day on Jan. 13. Forty Years Ago (Taken from the tiles of Jan. 0, 1927) The old familiar sound of Borden's whistle was a welcome sound to McHenryites this week, as it has not been heard for many months. The reason for the whistle--this week is that the Borden-Co., is filling its ice hcuse., Between thirty-five and forty men are employed in filling the two rooms in the house at the local Borden plant. f. H. Duker, superintendent^ qf our public schools, spfent three days at Springfield where he attended the state convention of the Illinois State Teachers association. The meeting to which Mr. Duker went as a delegate for the hortheastern division was held, in the Memorial building where nearly three thousand representatives from all parts of the state were accommodated. Miss Kathrine Frisby, nbout seventy years old, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Relihan. The basketball game between Notre Dame and Northwestern played at Chicago Monday evening was attended by several enthusiasts from McHenry. Those who witnessed the game were Earl Conway, Theodore Miller, LeRoy Conway, Gordon Stringer, Robert Conway, Joe Barbian, William Marshall and Arthur Kennebeck. Notre Dame won the game with a score of 27 to 21. Mr. and Mrs.«William H. Althoff entertained a merry crowd of friends on New Year's eve in a novel way. The main floor of the hardware store was cleared and dancing was enjoyed by the Henry. They returned to St. Louis on Friday. Donna Low left for California on Thursday after spending some time with her family. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Bauer and " family spent Christmas day with his Mother, Mrs. Olivia Bauer, in Mc Henry. Schaefer entertained a company of little ; folks, accompanied by their mothers, in honor of her daughter, Lorraine's birthday. The little guests were Ethel and Anita Althoff, Beatrice and Richard Williams. Bernice and Vernon Jerak, Donald Meyer. Buddy and Billy Halpin. Glen Peterson, Betty Jane Buss and Lorraine and Donald Schaefer. Games were played and refreshments were served part of which was a beautiful birthday cake. Clarence Thennes of St. Patrick's church, Dixon, brother of the bride, united the couple in marriage in St. Mary's church in McHenry. An accident which seriously injured Bob Schulz, 19, who has resided a few miles north of McHenry for the past three years, occurred last Friday morning at the Ringwood Chemical corporation. Impressive dedication services were held Dec. 28 at the newly constructed S p r ing Grove Methodist church. A son, who just missed being a Christmas baby, was born to Mr. andMrs. Dick Hester on Dec. 24. , Forty relatives were entertained at a Christmas dinner in the Scheid-Kenneb e c k home at . Griswold Lake. Guests. were present from North Chicago. Crystal Lake, Woodstock. Richmond. Waucondiji and McHenry, A fire broke out last Sunday afternoon on the V'asey farm south of McHenry occupied by the Martin Walsh family. The blaze was caused by clothing hanging near a stove. (Taken imiu^the flies of Dee. 27, 1936) •*- Joyce Adams entertained at the home of her parents on the occasion of her ninth birthday, Dec. 14. The Rev. Vincent P. Fislj, vicar of St. Paul's Episcopal Mission in McHenry, was ordained to the sacred order of priesthood on Dec. 21 by the Right Rev. Gerald Francis Burrill, bishop of the diocese of Chicago at the Cathedral of St. James. Father Fish has been serving St. Paul's Mission as its' vicar since July 1. Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitt died unexpectedly at her home in Johnsburg on Christmas eve. George Biggs' home in Edgebrook Heights won first Cook's Corner Pecan Cookies' 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups White Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar 4 Eggs (well beaten) 1 Cup Pecans (chopped) 1 Tbsp. Vanilla 1 Tsp. Salt Tsp. Baking Powder 4 Cups Sifted All-Purpose Flour Cream butter with both kind» of sugar. Add eggs, then pecans, vanilla, salt. Sift flour and baking powder. Add to first mixture and mix well. Shape into four rolls by placing dough on four cookie place award in home decorating contest sponsored by local Chamber*: of Commerce. sheets of wax paper and rolling back and forth. Store in refrigerator for several hours or until firm. Slice about one-quarter inch, thick and place on greased cookie $heet about one inch apart. Place pecan half in * center of each and bake in 375 degree oyen for eight minute. (I find that dropping a teaspoonful on a buttered sheet about an inch or more apart is easier.)
