MICROBES (Our Friends) Nowhtre in nature's immense complexity are the mysteries of life and death, and the struggle for survival more pronounced than among the microbes. Fortunately, most microbes are not hannful to man,but almost all ore hostile to one another. Thus, for some time, bacterial researchers have followed Pasteur's advice: "Use bacteria to combat a disease caused by other bacteria". Man has learned and is learning every day to borrow from microbes the substances which they secrete to kill other microbes; the result - antibiotics. STROLLING THROUGH THE PARK Alana Hendricks^should be in Australia soaking up the summer sunshine by now and I can think of an aiwful lot of people who would like to join her! The excited kid left from O'Hare Field last Saturday on the 5 o'clock flight and on hand to see her off were her best pal, Darlene Licastro, and Nina Jensen, besides her own family. The Hendricks family spent the previous weekend in Muskegon, Mich., with Grandpa and Grandma Hendricks who had a bon voyage party for the little traveler. She received lots of presents and this kid will sure have a lot to tell her own grandchildren when the time comes. Weekend guests at the Osman household were former Chicago neighbors, Bob and Elda Madson, who joined them bowling on Saturday evening. Kenny George ended a week of birthday cakes with a visit from his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George on Sunday. The whole week was one long party beginning with cake, and ice cream at nursery school. Get well wishes to Jamie Patterson who has had a severe cold for over a week. Jol-lyn Prazak is due for a tonsil removal <m Thursday. Happy ice cream eating. The Meurers had Grandpa and Grandma Meurer, Aunt Laura, Florence Blum and kids, -Billy.an$ Laura, outfromMaywood on Sunday for a turkey dinner. There was no celebration in particular unless it was coming out from hibernation after the Great Snow. The travelers couldn't believe lack of snow in comparison to what has been inundating them recently. Needless to say they got kinda panicky when the white stuff started falling in the afternoon. They enjoyed the sledding at Veterans Acres in spite of the cold. The Nlelsons had a visit over the weekend from their daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kali strom qf&Hheir three daughters, Valerie, Christine, and Lynette from Chicago. The Oakfords were the hosts on Sunday to a family gathering. Wally and Leah Nuss and Cheryl and Brian attended a belated wedding reception on Sunday evening. The wedding took place on Jan. 28 but due to the Big Snow there had to be a slight postponement of the post-nuptial celebration. Wally's nephew, Patrick, was the happy groom. The wedding party wore their wedding finery and carried their flowers for picture taking. They had a good time dancing and celebrating in spite of the lapse of time. Colleen Rogers celebrated her birthday in style by taking her girl friends to a local ice-* cream parlor for their pick of the menu. Her guests were Cindy Miller, Kim Ludwig and Sharon Burns besides her little brother, Mattie. She was ten years old cm the eighth. The Kujak family has lots of cause for celebration with the return home of son, Jim, after-a year in Thailand. Hope you enjoy your leave. This weather must really be a change after the tropical climate of Thai- .land. Due to my mistake the total collection of the recent March of Dimes drive in this area was $122 instead of the $133 which we reported. This is still quite a chunk of cash from generous donors. The Wagner family were hosts to Lloyd's folks On Sunday. Lloyd was a little under the weather during the last week with, a touch of virus of a sort. Rose and Ed Oswald entertained Barb and Joe Herman with dinner and cards last Tues-,. day evening. Their dinner guests on Sunday were the Druml family who really enjoyed' the delicious butterscotch and lemon pies that Grandma made for the boys. 'Course Kay and Ed got to have some too. The Druml family were guests last week at the home of Kay's sister, Blanche Geishecker, in Evanston. They had a nice visit after the delicious dinner. Those Drumls are going to be slightly obese around the edges if they don't quit all this gallavanting. To "round" out the week they were guests of Dave's wife, Donna, on Saturday evening where they spent the time playing cards. Buddy Druml is leaving for the sunny, sunny Southland on Wednesday where he will be stationed at Moody Air Force Base located near the Okefenokee Swamp where the small-mouth bass fishing is legend. Denny is considering ways of stowing away with the fishing gear. He'll probably be re-incarnated as a fish. Bud's leave is probably over just in time to save him from turning into a candidate for a weight losing club. Nedra Eckhart has been baking birthday cakes all week for assorted friends. They helped Marge Haug celebrate her natal day on Tuesday, and then joined Charlene Wimmer for another birthday celebration on Wednesday. They took a cake with them on Saturday to present to Norbie Kwiatekon his fourteenth birthday. Hope the Eckharts have sweet toothes or would it be sweet teeth? Hope you're back to school by now. The Selefskis had a visit on Si^day from son, Kennie Klein, and wife, Jackie, and their darling little girls. Grandma had a bc^l with three female types to cuddle. Grandma Neuenfeldt came out to visit the Humann family over the weekend. It was quite a treat for her to get out of the snow belt. A birthday party was held on Saturday evening for Cathy, Donna and Mary Beth whose birthdays fall in January, February and March. Grandpa and Grandmai Humann and uncle Harold came, as did aunt Chuck and uncle Phil, and aunt Joanie and uncle George and their combined offspring. Lew and Lenore Besserud rounded out the party to make it twelve adults and thirteen kids. Cake and coffee and ice cream were served with a valentine motif. It was a toss up as to who made more noise, kids or big kids. But to haul out the old cliche', a good time was had by all. Even mom •cuz Grandma helped with the dishes after the party. DON'T FORGET . The roller skating party tonight (if you get the paper on Wednesday). The Little League is having its annual family skating party at the roller rink from 7:30 to 10:30. FELLOWSHIP OFFICER David A.
