(WELCOME THE TEACHER ; "Hi Neighbors: ! "A group of people, including our superintendent, his business manager and a board nfiember had an informal gettogether last Sunday at our home and bad a delightful chat. Generally the topic was education and I, for one, was enlightened on several matters. •*For instance, I learned that one of the major problems is recruiting new teachers. It is, in fact, a critical situation. This left those of us present withthe challenge to do whatever we can to stimulate interest in this profession. And, it is my opinion that, each of you, even though you were not present, might have a solution. How might we entice good teachers t(ij Mc HenryV Salary does not appear to be a handicap as we affe competitive. What else have we to offer? Take inventory and I -am sure you can come up with something. After all, why dp you live here? because it's our great town right? Then, let's pass the word around, along with specifics such as our hospital and golf course. We might even dream up a few fantastic legitimate schemes like those used for TV advertising. '*'It doesn't end there. Once a.good teacher has cohsen to join us it seems most of us are^ guilty of neglecting to welcome them by including them in our way of life and making them feel they belong. There are a number of ways any of us might do our share ?md "sociality" is our key. How? Well, we might arrange to familiarize them with our shopping areas, in and around McHenry; if they have no family, we could invite them to dinner, an evening of bridge or a movie. The teacher need not be one your child has in school. Each school year a list of new faculty is released to our town paper. How about it,t Mr. and Mrs. Hospitality? "Also, housing is an outstanding problem for teachers, particularly for the single female teacher. Her first year, at least, should not be alone. Opening your home and being a sort of aunt and uncle to them could be a rewarding endeavor. However, we must realize shelter alone leaves much to be desired. They must be made to feel they are a part of the family without too many restrictions. "In closing, let me say our discussions were not only informative but fun and we think we would like to do this sort, of thing again from time to time. Therefore, snyone interested in being included next time please let me hear from you....teachers, remember you, too, are one of us. •Mrs. Philip Wheelock' •;:S i' PLEDGE FRATERNITIES David A.
