AGRICULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE IN COLLEGE NOTED A special meeting explaining agriculture and the junior college will be held at the Harvard high school agriculture department this Thursday, March 9. Representatives of Joliet Junior college will be at the meeting discussing agriculture and the junior college. Of what benefit is a junior college to an agricultural community? What are other junior colleges teaching in agriculture? How can farm people and all of the agricultural industries benefit in the training of prospective employees in agriculture in our community? These and many more questions will be discussed at this meeting. Max Kuster, director of agriculture, Joliet Junior college, will be present to aid in this very timely discussion of the junior college and agriculture. Agricultural businessmen in McHenry county should find the dispussion of Joliet's agricultural supply business curriculum of great interest and value. If you have a son or daughter who may be interested in agriculture at a junior college and may wish to find out what a junior college could offer in McHenry county for agriculture students, be sure to bring them to the meeting at Harvard. Saturday evening at a show and dinner sponsored by the McHenry Township Republican DOG TAX FINDS AMPLE'USE IN AREA PAYMENTS Did you know th&t your dog tax helped to pay for 300 chickens, 100 turkeys, forty-three sheep, four geese and three ducks last year? That's the case, according to County Treasurer Cal Skinner, Jr. On March 1 he paid the owners of these dead animals over $1,700 out of the $3700 collected by the county for dog licenses last year. The dog tax was enacted originally to protect owners of livestock and poultry against _ the attacks of wild dogs. Apparently they still abound in McHenry county, for fifteen owners in twelve of the county's seventeen townships laid claim to their rightful share of last year's dog tax. Only Alden, Algonquin, Dorr, Dunham and Seneca townships escaped the ravaging canines. For each claim, two persons other than the claimant must verify that the lives of the birds or animals in question were taken by dogs. Typically dogs maul their victims, while weasels merely remove the blood and foxes take the carcasses and devour them. In addition to the domesticated fowl and livestock for which claims were lodged lastyear, reimbursement is authorized for cows, horses, hogs, goats and guineas. Owners of pheasants and partridges are out of luck. USE THE CLASSIFIEDS McHenry VFW Post Htall 4600 PRESENTS ST. Sunnyside Beach, McHenry. The order was made by Judge Charles T. Smith in Branch I court this past week, with a requirement that the first sixty days be spent in the county jail. Weiss is charged with the theft of household goods. He was given a similar sentence for theft of a guitar and case front, a parked car of a Morton Grove man last May. The sentences will run concurrently. FLAMES CAUSE $5,000 DAMAGE IN ZENK HOME Defective wiring was believed by Fire Chief Ed Justen to be a possible cause of a fire which resulted in $5,000 damage to the John Zenk home at 1609 S. Crystal Lake road, McHenry, last Wednesday night. The Zenks reside in an upper apartment and another family on the main floor. A neighbor noticed the fire about 7 o'clock and notified the McHenry fire department. Members of Company I and n answered the call and brought the flames under control. Chief Justen said there was indication the fire may have started in the basement and worked through the floor and into a bedroom, which was most seriously damaged. Other sections of the home sustained smoke damage. There's plenty of good homespun eating in this meal-in-one dish. More good news: you can even assemble the casserole early in the day and refrigerate till about an hour before mealtime. Great for those hectic days when you've been away all afternoon and you've barely time to remove {our hat before the kids (and 'op!) begin clamoring for dinner. To make the easy oven dish, layer sliced cooked potatoes with cooked green beans in a casserole. Then spoon on a robust, velvety cheese sauce that's made in a jiffy from a can of condensed Cheddar cheese soup. Now place well-seasoned, shapely beef patties over the Cheddar cheesy soup-sauced vegetables. And into" the oven it goes. With such a hearty main dish, simple accompaniments are in order . . . hearts of lettuce salad, buttery-warm French bread, and, for dessert, easy fruit cobbler baked atang with the casserole.
