SECTION I - McHENRY PLAIN DEALER - MARCH 23, 1967 & Meanderin (Continued From Page 1) until the present time. The twenty - eight inch all - white chart has an approximate title 'A Fantastic Debt Wonderland?, after which one scans, in red ink, the lines extending from a sixteenth of an inch, representing a two billion dollar debt in 1690 (smallest noted) to almost the full length of the chart 360 billion dollars, in June of last year. For those of us who are more accustomed to one dollar bills, the billion figure so lightly tossed around has little meaning. The chart showing a relentless trend of the red ^en, does a great deal more * to convince one that the economics of this great country is ; in itself great. FREUND OBSERVES 45th BUSINESS YEAR An inspirational story most appropriate to the Easter season unfolded this week as Walter J. Freund prepared for the observance of his forty-fifth anniversary in business on March 28. A native of McHenry, he left the community with his family and returned to start the firm now known as McHenry Tire Mart, at 3931 Main street, in 1922. Although blind since 1910 as the result of an accident as a child, Mr. Freund has conducted his business, raised a family of five children and persued successfully several hobbies which would have been a credit even to the sighted person. The most important of these was work cm the beautiful inlaid wood table taps which he started making in 1942. In all, he estimates he ijiust have completed at least sixty-five, each requiring between one and two months. Today, they are located throughout the country, and one has even found its way tp distant Ethopia. , So tedious was the work that Mr. Freund decided to give up the hobby in recent years. Before establishing his present business, he travelled for five years prior to 1920 with vaudeville acts and circuses as a bag puncher. His performances took him throughout the United States and Canada and earned him the title of the U.S. champion from 1914 to 1920. „ Mr. Freund and his bride of forty-three years are the proud grandparents of twelve.
