Betsy Fossum will be preaching. March 29, the Young Mothers Group will be having their monthly luncheon at the Bluemel residence, The theme this month is a birthday party for Dale Bluemel who is about to hit the terrible twos. Every Tuesday and Thursday the young mothers meet at the church to do volunteer work. Some of the mothers babysit while others do the volunteer work by calling on CITIZENS SPEAK OUT FOR SUCCESS OF MENTAL DRIVE "I believe in keeping needed community services close to home," says Mrs. William H. Sherer of AJden. Mrs. Sherer is one of two dozen citizens from every township in McHenry county who has studied the incoming Mental Health referendum. These people, responsible citizens who are aware of the tax burden already heavy on many, feel (1) society will benefit; (2) people who require help will be aided most effectively, and (3) the final cost will be lower if the referendum is approved April 4. Mrs. W. C. Schloskey, McHenry, has first hand knowlege that a community can help in cases where mental retardation affects a youngster. "With the help of my former community, son is a useful citizen and able to enjoy life. I feel with community assistance and recognition, we can make this happen more frequently," she assert- • • • • 5 • = s ' • • She feels every needy case ' should be brought to the attention of persons able to assist the mentally ill or retarded. Her | (observation that people should jlcome forward is borne out in i jwhat has taken place during the .past year. Since the Mental Health Center of McHenry County made an effort to inform citizens of its services, facilities and desire to handle emergency cases, It has been swamped with calls. - : It has a big waiting list now <•#-150--although it is serving "348 patients today withapartial staff. However it still handles all emergency cases because George Mally, administrator, and the board feel immediate aid when help is first sought must be provided. Frank May, Richmond, sees a great need in the county, adding, "It will be possible to help patients who otherwise might end up in an overcrowded state hospital. They could become forgotten individuals." A look at the state records ; shows 44 McHenry county children are in state shcools for the retarded--indicative of de- : mand that aid be given. This county has eighteen on the waiting list to enter a state institution for children. people. Any interested persons are cordially invited to join the Young Mothers if only to coffee clutch. Two-thirds of the money was placed in the Home State Bank of Crystal Lake, while the other $100,000 was invested in the McHency State Bank. All will earn 4.5 percent interest. Two otter ccaiily hanks bid 4.5 per cent,' but each already had $200,000 invested in them at that rate. Bids were received from ten out of fourteen county banks. The bids ranged from 4 per cart to 4.5 per cent with the average bid being 4.2 percent. In January, the first time Skinner asked for bids, the average bid was 4.12 per cent. Thus, while interest rates are falling in the major money markets, they are rising for county funds in McHenry county. "In paying a premium interest rate on public funds, McHenry county banks are doing a public service to every taxpayer in the county," Skinner commented. "The more interest we earn, the lower taxes can be," he added. Free Keychain to the first 200 persons to present this coupon. McHenry Savings & Loan 3611 W.
