Wed Forty-Five Years KIWANIS SETS NEW RULES FOR SCHOLARSHIP The Kiwanis club of McHenry has had a scholar ship program for many years. When it was felt the rules for awarding the scholarship did not seem to accomplish the purpose the club had intended, a study was conducted. As a result of this evaluation, the present rules have been set i?) to more fully fulfill the intent of the program. The Kiwanis club of McHenry has established a $400 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior from McHenry Community high school in order to perpetuate what the Kiwanians feel is one of their main goals, aiding needy children. By requiring the recipient to major in special education or teacher education, this goal will be met more fully. Also, the Kiwanians feel that by making money available to the student in the second quartile (25 per cent - 50 per cent) of his graduating class, they are aiding the student who is worthy but is often overlooked and in need -of assistance. The deadline for receiving applications will be April 15. The committee will review applications to be sure the six rules for applying are met. The committee will make their final decisions on character, leadership and future goals as recorded on the application forms and recommended by the senior counselor. The winner and alternate will be announced by a member of the scholarship committee on Honors and Awards Day atthe McHenry Community high school. If the winner uses only part of the scholarship, the. remainder will go to the alternate (in the event the winner drops out of school). Hie applicant: 1. Must be a graduating senior boy or girl of McHenry Community high school. 2. Must be in the upper half, but not in the upper quarter of his class. 3. Must be accepted to a college or university. 4. Must be planning on majoring in special education or teacher education (mentally or physically handicapped curriculum). 5. Must not be a child of a member of the Kiwanis club of McHenry. 6. Must "submit his or her application, along with an official transcript by April 15 to the Kiwanis club of McHenry. Applications may be obtained from William Perry, senior counselor at the high school, or any Kiwanis member. "FRIENDLY TOWN" ASKS SUPPORT IN THIS COMMUNITY The nominating committee has been named for the McHenry* County Historical society with Mrs. Marjorie Frye, Woodstock,? as chairman and Mrs. Vernon Kays of Marengo and Miss Lenora Frisby of McHenry assisting. The slate of officers will be presented to the general membership at the annual meeting of the society, to be held at the Opera House, Woodstock, on Monday, May 8, at 8 p.m. The society has recently been given a number of items from the estate of James E. Fuller, Hebron, by his widow. Among them are a 1935 Oliver tractor, the first in the county, iron kettle, hand cultivator; wood barrels, coal scuttle, wagon springs, laundry stove, double trees for 5 horse hitch, milk pail and stool, hog gambles which were made about 1880, jockey stick, saws, butter pressor and crocks, field jugs, molasses jug and a folding cot bought in 1900 for Mrs. Fuller. Also a bob sled from 1919. The hoe, crow bar and fork go back to 1880' s and belonged to Mr. Fuller's father, Henry Fuller, and brought by him from New York state when he came to McHenry county in 1908. The mail box was handmade by a farm hand back in New York and the senior Mr. Fuller paid ten cents for it in 1903. Many of these items will be on display during the county fair at the site of the log cabin on the grounds. MR. AND MRS. PLAN ELECTION OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY OFFICERS A comparatively new project locally, called "Friendly Town", has Christ the King Catholic church of Wonder Lake as a sponsor. However, the program is non-denominational. "Friendly Town" gives people the opportunity to share summer joy with a child from the inner city. It is a program sponsored by the Chicago City Missionary society which brings these children to live for two weeks with "host" families. In effect, the society and its volunteer helpers serve as a "bridge" between inner city churches and church related social agencies and the members of suburban and out of town churches and synagogues. The children are between the ages of 6 and 11 and hosts may specify the age range desired and also whether they prefer a girl or boy. All children registered for "Friendly Town" receive a doctor's examination. Families that participate learn that under the skin, all little boys and girls are pretty much alike except for certain niceties. It is hoped that families may ask to have the child back another year, or may want to ask for a new child. Local folks who wish more information concerning the project may contact Pat Dusthimer, 653-6310, or Kathy Matesi, 653- 3826. Easter Program For OES Chapter Chapter No. 547 of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold a stated meeting and Easter program in Acacia hall on Tuesday evening, March 28, at 8 p.m. Everyone attending is asked to bring two colored or decorated Easter eggs for an egg hunt.
