Be Kind To Your Carpet Smoke Fumes Can Cause Rug Damage. Sulphuric acid can cause rapid deterioration of rugs and carpets. A common source of sulphuric acid is in coal, fuel, oil and "city" gas. Improperly banked coal fires, inparticular, produce sulphur dioxide gas which combines with moisture to form sulphuric add. Chimneys in attics are also sources of destructive gases, since, enough escapes through masonry to damage fabrics in adjacent areas. Large investments in rugs and other materials are lost annually through storage in attics where chimney gases permeate the atmosphere. Periodic professional cleaning will prevent such damage or hold it to a minimum. SOAP CAN BE CARPET FOE. Soap and water, both wonderful in most cases, are capable of doing extensive damage to rugs and carpets. Lack ofthoro rinsing leaves fatty deposits after the use of ordinary soaps, causing three undesirable cot& ditions. 1. A rancid odor eventually develops. 2. The fatty deposit catches and holds dirt, thus promoting rapid resoiling. 3. The alkaline content of soap often has an adverse effect on dyes. CARBON TET IS DANGEROUS. Although carbon tetrachloride removes dirt it is extremely dangerous as its toxicity is high and it may be absorbed through the skin into the blood stream. It has an anesthetic effect when inhaled and may affect organic tissues such as kidney, liver and heart resulting in possible death. WINTER SEASON'S SALT, * ASHES May' Bfi DAMAGING. Salt and ashes spread on slippery winter sidewalks may save broken bones but they can also bring headaches when tracked indoors onto rugs and carpets, as serious discoloration and fiber damage can be caused by both substancfs. Salt will attract moisture, thus keeping a What Soils Rugs And Carpets Mainly dust and dirt. Plus atmospheric soil, plus staining and spotting from accidents and tracked in deposits. Dust in the form of light, dry, air-borne particles settles on rug surfaces and usually can be picked up easily with carpet sweeper. ' Heavy dirt is usally tracked in on shoes or by animals, deposits of earth, sand, clay, combined with grease or oils, asphalt, rubber etc. Rug vacuuming removes surface dust and some dirt deposits, but much remains and works deep down into the carpet nap through to rUg backing. Sharp, gritty particles under foot pressure can cut fibers, shorten rug life. Grease deposits trap and retain more dirt. Unless professionally cleaned at least twice a year, some fabrics, particularly lighter colors, become permanently darkened or shaded. Do-it-Yourself products are not always safe or satisfactory in performance. Never use gasoline -- it's a fire hazard and leaves oil film in the carpet. Soap and water can ruin rugs through over-wetting and common household bleaches can ^permanently remove or change wtig colors. _ _ rug damp and resulting in brown spots which often follow prolonged wetting. When the rug does dry, a white crusty appearance may follow. Since some dyes are adversely affected by salt, fading may also result. Ashes can cause even more damage since they are apt to be alkaline and thus very harmful to dyes. Alkalinity will also damage some fibers used in rug manufacture, ft is recommended that if ashes or salt have been tracked in during the winter months, rugs and carpets should be given a professional cleaning as soon as possible to forestall permanent damage. Here's Smooth Way to Varnish Is tfiere a varnishing project on the agenda? For the smooth, bubble-free finish that sometimes seems so difficult to achieve, try this simple procedure; Use a soft bristle brush of good quality. Grip the brush by the ferrule, allowing the handle to rest between thumb and forefinger. Dip the brush in the varnish, to no more than one-third of the length of the bristles. Don't wipe off excess varnish on th&rim of the can. Do tap the brush gently against inside of can. This removes excess, prevents dripping, yet leaves brush "loaded" with enough varnish for smooth application.
