CONDUCT PILOT STUDY FOR AREA CONSERVATION McHenry county's Soil and Water Conservation district has recently signed a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation service. Under this agreement, funds will be supplied from the district and the federal government to conduct a pilot project in interpreting soils for urban and agricultural development. Grafton township was selected as the site for this project, th^lirst such project in the United States, as it encompasses the best blend of urban and agricultural area in the county. McHenry county was also the first U.S. county to be completely mapped for agricultural land use, septic systems, building foundations and floodingpotentials. These four soil interpretations, combining both natural resource aspects and economic aspects needed for sound and factual planning, will be incorporated into one large map. Upon completion of this pilot project, 500 maps will be available on a cost basis from the Soil and Water Conservation district and 500 will be distributed by the UJS. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation service as part of a "How To Be K" program in resource planning. The completed project will then be presented to McHenry county's board of supervisors and the McHenry County Planning commission, yirho will cooperate in completing the project for the rest of the county. John Quay, executive secretary of the Planning commission, stated that the results of such a pilot project will be a tremendous asset in outlining future plans in all areas for McHenry county. Kenneth V. Fiske, chairman of the district's board of director s,° announced that USDA Soil Conservation Service Biology Specialist Rex Hamilton from Champaign will be in the McHenry district on April 29 to observe some of the outstanding wildlife area improvement projects some of the cooperators are developing with district assistance. Main street, which has housed the Magic Slack business. Fourteen persons will be employed in the new business. Growth, and the lack of available facilities in Crystal Lake, were the reasons given by Nordex for leaving the city in which it was located for about a year. When in full operation, Herbert Peterson, company head, said Nordex plans to make ten sailboats a day and at least one of its new power boats. The firm is also working with the editor of Yatchman magazine to develop a sailboat for Olympic competition. It will be tested and raced this summer and go to France in September to race in front of the International Yacht Racing union against world-wide competition as a candidate for an Olympic boat.
