But to us psychiatrists they admit their real feelings. So scrapbook this case. Our young men are as brave as ever but they just don't like to die to sway presidential elections! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M. D. CASE C - 537: Martin G., aged 18, is a juvenile delinquent. "It isn't all my fault," he angrily exclaimed. "For I couldn't get a job, since I haven't served time with the military. "Bosses don't want you if you may be jerked off the job bythe draft. "And why should I go to college when I never know when I'll be drafted? "Who wants to die in some jungle swamp far across the ocean? In Herb Lyon's column I read that 40,000 GIs have been blinded or lost limbs by Viet Cong booby traps. - "My two buddies went to Viet Nam last fall. One has already been blown to pieces on a land mine. The other is paralyzed for life from the neck down! And he's only 19. "So I figure I might as well live it up and get drunk, for what chance do I have, anyway?" DRAFT DILEMMA It isn't often publicly discussed, but the drafting of American teen-agers has been a deep-seated demoralizing influence ever since 1940. Compulsory military service has always been abhorrent, not only here but also in Europe. And never In the history of America had we established a peacetime draft until October, 1940. F. D. Roosevelt thus broke the previous 150-year tradition of freedom of American youth from peacetime conscription. And we've had it ever since. It has been a strong subconscious infuence on youth, which drives them to liquor parties, drag racing and delinquency. In Viet Nam our men literally tally the days till they can get away! They look forward with great longing to the end of their first six months, for then the "count down" starts and they can eagerly mark their calendars with 180 days, then 179, 178, etc. And when they break the final number "lo," they celebrate to offset what they tall the "single digits' fidgets," knowing that they begin 9-8-7-6-5- 4-3-2-1 and then out of that hated place. It isn't that our men aren't brave or patriotic. But they are irked at having to fight, Indian style, behijndtrees, except with, machine guns instead of bow s and arrows. They feel we should utilize our vaunted air superiority to blast the factories and bridges of North Viet Nam,. so the enemy's civilians would be thrown out of jobs and thus revolt againt their government. They know, too, that Gen. McConnell, head of our Air Force, has publicly stated the . war would be over in 24 hours if the handcuffs were removed from our bombers. And this doesn't involve nuclear bombs but merely the block busters! But for political reasons our boys are still dying and thousounds are becoming paraplegics or quadriplegics, apparently to stall off victory till the presidential election ofl968. If Gen. McConnell is right (and he certaily should have the facts), then why should we sacrifice thousands of boys unnecessarily? (Always write to Dr,. Crane in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his bookiets.)
