S \ CkamLr Of & ommerce (The Presidents Desk) ••••••••••••••••••••••A Many thanks to the fine gals of the VFW Auxiliary. The All Sports Banquet - good chow and wonderful service. Handed Earl Walsh a hot potato and he did his usual smooth introduction with Rip Collins. The All Sports is sponsored each year by the VFW, School Board of District 156 and the Chamber (wonder if little Tom Pougherty & Tiny had enough to eat). Rip Collins said he'd bet on those two in any eating contest. We made it! Chamber membership is now over one hundred and still going (quite a few promises too). Hope all the promises are honored soon. Would like to report 110 by next month. Met with Don Weirigart and Jake Mariho recently along with R. MacDonald of Decoration unlimited. Looks as if there will be more and better Christmas decorations this year. As always, money is the problem, but our larger membership this year will help us do a bigger and better job. At the last Board m?eting, it was resolved that the City should definitely move towards licensure of all service, retail and industrial businesses inthe area. The Chamber has received many and varied reports of unfair business practices and is investigating each complaint. The board is of the opinion that if business were investigated and licensed prior to opening it would be a great protection for you the consumer. The resolution was forwarded to the Mc- Henry City Council. Have heard nothing as yet. Am sure we will have something by the next time you read "President's Desk". Until such time as action is taken the Chamber will pursue any reports brought to its attention. After a thorough evaluation, it was felt that the donation of the twenty pints would not short change any of the members of the local blood bank, and it was needed for the unfortunate people injured by the tornado. Mr. Guettler was advised that through the' interest of other organizations such as the American Legion, the community will soon be able to open the blood bank to cover the entire area designated inthe orig- The Chamber of Commerce, McHenry, Illinois. It is intended that all permanent residents in the. district will be covered for their needs as , soon as there are sufficient donors available to supply them. A recent evaluation with the Michael Reese Blood Bank disclosed that for an area of this size it would take a list of approximately 1,200 potential donors to supply the needs. There are presently 500 names. It is urged that any who are not already on the donor list, please contact Edward Gijettler at 385- 9831 to add their name to the list of potential donors. SHOP IN McHENRY Congressman Robert McClory reports that more than 15,000 questionnaires have been answered and returned to his Washington office in response to his biennial poll of 12th district voters. The problem of opening and counting the 12th district citizens' reactions on issues pending before the Congress is taxing the congressman's staff. The answered questionnaires themselves will be tabulated speedily on computers. The congressman estimates that this information will be accurately determined within the next two or three weeks. However, there is the additional problem of responding to individual inquiries and suggestions which accompanied many of the answered questionnaires. Faced with a daily stack of fresh mail generated by the poll of approximately 140,000 12th district homes, Congressman McClory declared: "I am grateful for the interest and intelligent views expressed by many 12th district citizens in response to the questionnaire poll. These citizen expressions are of great value in the formulation of my position on critical national issues. I am particularly impressed by the many sincere and individually composed letters which I have received during these last weeks." Congressman McClory expects to make an early report to the 12th district citizens on the questionnaire poll results. The congressman will also report the results to his colleagues in the 90th Congress. Any 12th district voter who failed to receive a questionnaire may procure one by con- UNIT 491 Disabled war veterans in hospitals and convalescent workshops in many parts of the country are finding interesting and remunerative occupation by making memorial poppies for The American Legion and auxiliary. Poppy Day is scheduled for May 26 and 27 in McHenry, reports Mrs. Vicki Bottari, Poppy chairman of the McHenry unit. Every year the American Legion supplies materials to the veterans in the various Veterans admini stration hospitals (at no cost to the veteran), and compensates them for their efforts. Medical authorities agree that the activity provides important therapy for the hospitalized veterans. During the month of May some 150,000 American Legion auxiliary members throughout the nation are involved in preparation for the traditional day of remembrance, and McHenry unit will have their members well supplied with the little red flowers, asking those who pass by on the streets of McHenry to wear a Poppy. We have so often read the poignant poem "In Flanders Field", which is a reminder of the valiant men who lost their lives in the first World War, but today we esteem the Poppy as a memorial to all men killed in ali of our tragic wars. Mrs. Bottari pointed out that monies received by the American Legion and the auxiliary on Poppy Day will be used for the rehabilitation of hospitalized and needy veterans and their families. She emphasized the fact that the bulk of the funds contributed will remain in the community where they are raised in order to continue the vital service programs of the local Legion post and unit in rehabilitation and child welfare. tacting the Congressman Robert McClory, House Office Building, Washington, D.C., 20515. OBSERVE MAIL BOX IMPROVEMENT WEEK MAY 15-20 Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien saidthisweek that national Mailbox Improvement Week is being observed by the Post Office department from May 15 to 20. The department, Mr. O'Brien explained, has sponsored similar observances for many years. Hiey have been very helpful in encouraging postal .customers to maintain their mail boxes in good shape, with resulting greater security for the mails, he pointed out. Not only are householder or home owners judged by the appearance of their homes and surrounding grounds and mail boxes, but whole communities and subdivisions are likewise judged. Various organizations have traditionally joined in the observance of Mailbox Improvement Week as part of their civic programs to make their communities more attractive, Postmaster LeRoy M. Smith said. The observance has stimulated organized activities in many communities to develop more attractive boxes, surrounded by flowers and the addition of color, metal work, or standards which tie in with the family name or occupation. Many become points of interest for neighbors to point out to visitors in pride; some, unfortunately are pointed out because of their bad appearance. The boxes are served along nine rural routes and three mounted routes in the suburban areas from the McHenry post office. A total of 33,000 people are serviced by the McHenry post office and of this 30,400 are served through curbside mail boxes. This represents 7,600 boxes, Postmaster Smith said, "that could be 7,600more reasons why this is a beautiful country to live in and be proud or.
