Farm Bureau Reprsents All Facets Of Farming The McHenry County Farm Bureau's 2,950 mem-rbers are united to protect and advance agriculture by working through four "cornerstones". Many people will understand the work of Farm Bureau better if a frequent comparison is used: Farm Bureau is similar to the Chamber of Commerce, which businessmen and professional men have in cities. Farm Bureau is a general farm organization with . volunteer membership. The organization represents all facets of farming and is a family membership because farming today is a family operation. The four cornerstones are 1. education, 2„ information 3. legislation and 4. business services. Each year Farm Bureau undergoes a major policy development procedure to learn what farmers think on matters of concern to them. The policies of Farm Bureau come from the membership. The officers, directors and staff members of McHenry County Farm Bureau, Illinois Agricultural Association, and the American Farm Bureau Federation are guided by these policies. The McHenry County Farm Bureau is directed by 17 directors, one from each of the 17 townships in McHenry county. Dale Noe, Marengo farmer, is president. Henry Edgerton, serving his 10th year as the executive secretary, is the full-time manager of Farm Bureau and carries out the program of work established by the board of directors. Farm Bureau originated more than 50 years ago to bring the "how to farm better" information from the University of Illinois to the farm. Thus, the first cornerstone -- education --was established. Farm Bureau was organized in McHenry county in 1912. Farm Bureau is a major source of finances for the Agricultural Extension service -- about $3 out of the local $18 membership dues supports Extension service, including the agricultural 4-H program. Farm Bureau's information program is carried out in many ways. Farm Bureau publishes a monthly newspaper, "Farmer's News". It serves local newspapers with news stories. It holds press conferences when developments warrant this action. It maintains a booth at the county fair and it sponsors an annual meeting each September. It is in the field of legislation that Farm Bureau is particularly active and represents members at a significant peak. The IAA and AFBF represent Farm Bureau at the state and national levels, respectively. Here are some local matters in which Farm Bureau has been active: 1. Restriction and control of trailer parks. 2. Working with county zoning committees and other officials to modify state zoning laws to achieve equitable, realistic zoning on agricultural land here in the county. 3. Helped improve telephone service in parts of the county. T\ 4. Helped maintain or improve mail service in Ringwood area. V 5. Working with county drainage district and conservation officials. 6. Successfully battled to Improve collectionof back personal property taxes in 1964. 7. Studying present tax objection law problem, working to help school districts and other authorized taxing bodies receive money due them from taxes levied. Assistance of IAA expert is a major help-- more achievements are expected. 8. Struggled to secure best possible roads in rural areas and continuing to serve as a watchdog. 9. At the state level, Farm Bureau fights for tax reform to relieve personal property and real estate tax burdens. McHenry County Farm Bureau is one of the major watchdogs on local tax matters. As the Farm Bureau grew, it became obvious the organization could save farmers money on farm supply products. Some business services were started and they achieved the job sought. Here in McHenry county two local affiliated services -- McHenry FS and Country Companies insurance program -- are major business tools of farmers. Services in grain and livestock marketing, animal health products and other areas are also available. The lower prices farmers pay for services is a major saving. Stanley Steagall is McHenry FS manager. Jack Satorious is the Farm Bureau insurance agency manager. Farm Bureau sponsors several other projects. Among them are the Sports Festival, product promotion, marketing and the annual Future Farmers of America -- Farm Bureau Day, and many free services for members in the office.
