RECOMMENDATIONS CSVENON SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION Recently, at a special joint meeting of both boards of education, District 15 and 156, the boards approved the following recommendations submitted by the Blue Ribbon Transportation committee: <<A11 students living 1% miles or more from school will be transported free of charge in accordance with the State School code. We recommend a nominal charge/be levied for all students riding who live within the 1% mile limit distance from their school. Charge will be on a sliding scale for more than one child in a family. First child, $2 month, $18 per year; second child, $1 month, $9 per year; third and all others, $1 month, $9 per year; $36 maximum per family per year. "This nominal charge is subject to revision based on cost experience. Those desiring transportation within this limit will sign i4> in spring so bus contract can be figured. The charge for riding will be due and payable at time of registration in fall. "This fee would include bus transportation both ways for all kindergarten children presently being transported only either to or from school. Those outside the 1% mile area who ride free would also be given the second ride on school buses at no cost. To economically provide the second ride, we suggest that at time of registration for kindergarten, attendance in morning or afternoon will be determined by area where' child lives so that all children from one area can be transported as efficiently as possible. "We further recommend that present contractors be properly compensated for their equipment by any changes that are made. DISMISSAL TIMES "We recommend that dismissal times be changed as needed so bus schedules can be as efficient as possible. There is the possibility of eliminating two buses each day with proper coordination of times. "We recommend pick-up points be established for subdivision and shuttle bus pickup to eliminate unnecessary stops which take time and are costly in operation. "We suggest that a school board delegation approach the cily of McHenry council to discuss their cooperation in setting tup of an ordinance that will provide for sidewalks in areas where cMldren will be walking to schools. This would be a great help in eliminating the hazard of open highway walking. "Procuring crossing guards for most dangerous areas would also be an area where the city and the schools could and should work cooperatively. "It has been suggested that in the future, school sites are more carefully considered to place the schools where the walking population is. This could be a long-term economy that will affect our school transportation picture favorably from now on. "The committee would like to go on record as commending the present group of bus contractors, owners and drivers for their dedication and PUBLIC LIBRARY IS ESTABLISHED BY LOCAL YOUTH r Through the efforts of 16- year-old Michael Byrne, a sophomore at Clearwater Central Catholic high school, the first public library is being es-, tablished in the small community of Pearl Harbor, Fla., located at the Civic clubhouse. Michael, a former student at St. Patrick's grade school in McHenry and Marian Central high school, resides with his family at 514 Mineral Springs drive, McHenry, and in Florida. The young man began cataloging two bookcases of books recently, his interest sparked when a fire chief in the community donated a number of service to our school systems over their years of service. And we feel sure that the children served by this group of people have benefited over the years from their personal attention to their job. They have served in a "more than satisfactory*' fashion. books he had bought at an auction. Michael servies as a sacristan at St. Ignatius Catholic church in nearby Tarpon Springs and during a spring cleaning this year was given several more books to addto the library, along with a bookcase, an' antique phonograph and a stack of old records from the church store room. Always a book lover, he has served as an assistant in his school library during lunch periods, where he became familiar with cataloging. This fall he intends to enter the Missionary of the Holy Family in St. Louis, Mo., to study to become a "brother". The library in Palm Harbor will be carried on by his parents during his absence. The library now contains encyclopedias, books on subjects of philosophy, religion, social science, language, etc.Through donations by the Civic club members and area residents, the ilittle library is expected to continue to expand.
